Disney Closes Junction Point Studios

Posted on Tuesday, January 29 @ 09:05:58 Eastern by Keri_Honea

Rumors flitted about yesterday that Disney had closed or was going to close Junction Point Studios, its Austin-based developer founded by Warren Spector that produced both Epic Mickey and Epic Mickey 2. Unfortunately, Disney has confirmed these rumors today with the following official statement:

It was with much sadness that we informed our teams today of changes to our Games organization, which include the closure of Junction Point Studios. These changes are part of our ongoing effort to address the fast-evolving gaming platforms and marketplace and to align resources against our key priorities. We’re extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with Disney Epic Mickey and Disney Epic Mickey 2.

As tragic as the news is, it's sadly not surprising with reports that Epic Mickey 2 only sold 270,000 copies. Disney is probably also focusing its resources on heavily marketing and producing its upcoming interactive toys, Disney Infinity.

Epic Mickey had promise and suffered from a bad camera, from what I've heard epic Mickey 2 wasn't good at all

It certainly wasn't made for the triple A industry. But it was a franchise that cold held on its own if people gave it some chances.
Sad to see that studio close down. In the making of interviews, the studio members were all really passionate about their games. Something we rarely see in the industry.

Farewell video game version of Mickey and Oswald. We won't forget you two.

They may have been passionate, but they weren't great designers. Each game suffered from the same issues, EM2 didn't fix much. Probably for the best to cut these guys loose.

I've not played either game so can't comment. However, this was a studio founded by some of the greatest talent to ever get into making games. Most of the best games to come out in the past ten years owe much of what made them worthwhile to what they ripped off from the games made by that talent. It's heart-breaking to hear that. Maybe they've lost their spark.

I dunno, I thoroughly enjoyed EM2. I can understand the issues people have brought up - the camera still was glitchy, the biggest complaint - but it's still a shame to hear this news.
