DmC Launch Sales Bust In Japan, Performs Worse Than All Predecessors

Posted on Thursday, January 24 @ 19:27:14 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Devil may fail?

Media Create's figures for the week of January 14th to January 20th place DmC: Devil May Cry at the top, but even that's not quite enough. With fewer than 116,000 units sold across two platforms, it has failed to meet even the lowest first-week sales numbers in Japan for the series. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening has now moved to being the second worst performer with over 190,000 units sold in its first week, a respectable margin over its younger—and stranger looking—brother.

Below are the top 20 selling games on the list:
01./00. [PS3] DmC: Devil May Cry <ACT> (Capcom) {2013.01.17} (¥6.990) - 110.429 / NEW
02./01. [3DS] Animal Crossing: New Leaf # <ETC> (Nintendo) {2012.11.08} (¥4.800) - 97.448 / 2.283.756 (+17%)

19./26. [WII] Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Super Deluxe Edition # <ACT> (Bandai Namco Games) {2012.11.29} (¥5.040) - 5
DmC was certainly no stranger to controversy prior to release, and it appears that did more harm than good. We found the game to be delightful, so it's safe to say that poor execution isn't a factor. You can't blame the genre, either, when God of War III was able to break 1.2 million units sold in the same time frame only two years ago. Yep, DmC is just a sales bust (so far).

In case you're wondering, the Xbox 360 version sold less than 5,724 units while the PlayStation 3 version sold precisely 110,429. The question is who's doing worse in Japan, Microsoft or the new Dante?

You can blame Capcom, I'm not buying full-priced games from a publisher that does things like sell SFxTekken with locked on-disc content AKA future DLC, among other things I don't remember right now.

I don't know if it has, but because of the mistakes Capcom has made in the past I will not buy games they release in the future like this one, even if it is a good game and doesn't have anything like that. Ok maybe I'll buy it in a sale.

That's... a very bad philosophy to live by. Why not just try the demo and see if you like it or not? Cause i doubt that putting your fingers in your ears will fix capcom's problem.

I wouldn't really call flexing your one major source of power as a consumer a "bad philosophy." If you like or don't like the way a company is doing something, then there's no policy better than speaking with your wallet. If enough people talk to Capcom and tell them that their policies are costing them money, why wouldn't they listen? That's the absolute fundamental point of a boycott, or hell even just being an intelligent consumer, in the first place.

And my understanding is that DmC has a little bit of on-disk DLC in the form of a few costumes, but I think they might've made those free. I'm not keeping up with the game very closely.

Actually, i believe the best way to fix a company isn't to speak with your wallet but rather to join their community and let your voice be heard there. And i don't mean saying "I didn't buy your product but hear me out" cause that will make some capcom employee roll their eyes. I'm actually talking about actively being part of the fanbase the company is trying to cater to by showing both support and criticizing their actions. Not by being the consumers that the ever out of touch marketing team wants you to be.
Cause i fear more that the company will cater the people who actually bought the game more then the old fans who whines. Remember the street fighter DLC controversy? And do you remember how much of a mint Capcom made anyway with ultimate street fighter? If they can't get the money out of your wallet, they'll take it from someone else. Probably someone who doesn't share the same view of what their policies should be.

DMC3 was the worst-selling in the series?! WTF?! It's the gaming equivalent of sex.
Anyway, I'm sad for Ninja Theory, but it was to be expected. Whiners will whine.

Demo didn't impress me, so will pass on game. I think demo hurt the game, though I probably would not have bought. Played and loved the first one. Hack/Slash under statment?

Still gonna buy the PC version. All the whiners are what killed the sales without giving the game a chance. Times like this I am embarrassed to be a gamer.

No matter how good the game might be and good reviews it getting, this is what happens when you alientate the fans of your series with a reboot they don't want, especially since the game before it had loose ends. Then when you get a huge backlash you ignore it. Not good

I am not surprised DMC3 was the lowest before, despite being an amazing game. DMC1 was revolutionary and DMC2 people did not know would suck and bought it off the hype of DMC1. DMC3 might have had to deal with how people felt about DMC2.

The series needed it though. Some times you just have to do what's right and say f^ck the fan base. In this case f^ck the whining fan base. Most of the fans were pretty open to the reboot, but there were some that were really vocal and gave the game an undeserved bad rep before it was even released. DmC fans should be embarrassed and ashamed for doing this to NT.

They should be ashamed for not buying a game they didn't want? The only way they could have convinced anyone above the age of five or with an IQ above 60 to not buy the game was to point to what information was available and condemn it on the basis of that.

I kinda feel that neither side owes anything to the other. If Ninja Theory/Capcom wanna say, as you put it "F--- the fanbase," then low sales are the risk that they take, and they know this going into the project. They're professionals and should be allowed to make what they want instead of simply what makes the most guaranteed money. I respect that.

But while I respect that, it also doesn't make ME Capcom and Ninja Theory's *****. This is a two-way street. If I don't want what they're selling, and I don't like the way they're running their ship, then I have every right to vote with my wallet. There's nothing wrong with this at all, and certainly nothing to be "ashamed" about. My money and my time will be spent on another game in the myriad of good ones out there.

I see your point. I guess I'm just upset that no one even gave the game a chance. Gamers are supposed to be more open minded than that.

I think this whole argument is a crock of **** period, people just need to stop fighting with each other as well as Capcom, and just play some damn games. The fanbase of video games is too full of morality arguments right now, whatever happened to the era of just playing games?

Well in that sense, people shouldn't really care about the low sales or the fan backlash and just enjoy the game for what it is. You know, like in the good old days... sigh... i feel old.

That's what I was getting at, if you enjoy the game, play it, if not, don't. People need to quit trying to get the other side to agree with them, because they won't succeed. Just... enjoy games, and stop trying to get others to agree with you to validate your own opinion, as if you need their approval. I like a lot of games that others think suck, movies as well. Just enjoy what you like, and quit turning it into something political.

The game gets rebooted in direction we dont like and people go:
"shut up and dont talk you dont know if its gonna be bad!"
NT hops ontop of the table, throws their pants down squats on the plate and begins to grunt, and your reaction is
"It's not out yet!! you can't tell if it's **** or not!!"
And when a steamig turd hits the plate with a contour of diarrhea splashing your face the reaction is
"its really good if you just focus on the good parts, dont look at the ****, and dont compare it to the steak someone else got, thats not fair, this restaurant never learned how to make steak"

So in short, I should not complain, I shouldn't be against it and I should spend my money on things I dont like in order to make my opinion considered?
I wouldn't be surprised when the restaurant closes.

It's cute how you're trying to compare Japanese sales of a WESTERN game to the American sales of another popular WESTERN game. Don't let your bias show too much. Just a hint there.
