LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

Dust 514 To Become First Free-To-Play FPS On PS3

Posted on Monday, March 5 @ 11:16:58 Eastern by

Set in the ever populated EVE Universe, Dust 514 from CCP Games will be bringing its MMOFPS universe exclusively to the PlayStation 3. A simply download from the PlayStation Network store is enough. Just make sure you have enough room on your PS3.

CCP CEO Hilmar Pétursson believes this will be groundbreaking:
DUST 514 has everything you could want in a shooter: thrilling gameplay, spectacular graphics and an incredible strategic depth that comes from sharing the living universe of EVE Online.

DUST 514 embodies the passion and creativity the world has come to expect from CCP, and we think PlayStation®3 owners will be amazed at the opportunity to play such a groundbreaking new game of this caliber for free
Sony's Phil Rosenberg is equally as excited to have this leg up on Microsoft:
As the first true free-to-play FPS on PS3™, DUST 514 signifies a big step forward in the evolution of console gaming. PS3™ is the only platform where players will experience a AAA game like this for free, and showcases our commitment to deliver the best games exclusively on PlayStation Network.
Arriving later this year, Dust 514 will be demoed for the first time at CCP's EVE Fanfest in Reykjavik, Iceland on March 22-24. Closed private trials began in December 2011 and will extend into beta soon.

Is this to encourage more sub's to eve online? Is there an incentive to play eve online and dust 514?

By free to play do they mean free to play or "free to play"? Because if there's a cash shop that pretty much defeats the whole purpose, weren't you supposed to be able to hire merceneries, and there would be ranks and whatnot and the higher merceneries would cost more? But then if there's a cash shop the highest ranks will just be the dudes that paid the most and they won't even need the ingame money they get from EVE players.

I would generally expect it to be FTP w/ microtransactions. Hopefully it errs more on the TF2 side of things, where nothing is explicitly forbidden to FTP players. Maybe even indirectly free--by allowing ISK as a currency, like you suggested.

Just wanted to add in here that I have definitely read online that Dust 514 is being designed with mouse and keyboard support. There is a lot of good info on Dust 514 on the net, just google it and find one of the fansites. I'm really excited when I hear that the dev's are hinting at a PC port of DUST 514 in a year or two.

I'd be even more excited if there was total integration with E.V.E online and an E.V.E online PS3 client. Imagine landing your ship and switching to FPS mode? The amount of ambition and scale for something like that wouldn't be worth it though. Unless E.V.E had a shitload of subscribers.

Who am I kidding...Thanks to it's steep learning curve I still wouldn't play it. :(. I wish I was more patient.

    MAG is free-to-play, I think.
    but man...I hated that game.

I'm excited for this though, isn't there a Vita version as well?
