EA Boss Afraid Of Getting Sacked, Says Pachter

Posted on Tuesday, July 10 @ 12:02:12 Eastern by

According to infamous crystal ball analyst Michael Pachter in Develop Online, Electronic Arts president John Riccitiello confided in him about his anxiety that he'll be fired due to the low stock price of the company. I'm not sure I would air my colleague's personal feelings so openly, but there it is.

Though EA's earnings have increased, its stock is still at an all-time low, perhaps showing that investors are weary of video game companies and its high-risk business model.

John Riccitiello, however, believes that the length of the current console cycle has "contributed to sequelitis", citing Guitar Hero and the music genre in general as the prime example.
[I]n 2008, when we said it’ll be a three-year turnaround, I thought new consoles were coming out in 2010-2011.
I must say, though, that sequelitis doesn't lose its effect over console generations; in fact, the launch lineup of almost new console are chock full of sequels and ports. If you don't want sequelitis, make new properties and follow through on good ideas. On that note, sequels aren't a problem if they're executed properly.

How do you think Electronic Arts should improve its stock price?

Increase the quality of their products, ESPECIALLY Ncaa and Madden. If EA had the same mindset that Apple does, their stock would increase. The mindset of, lets make the best product possible. I get the vibe that EA just tries to get by, add the fewest new enhancements, gamemodes, upgrades, etc... Just enough. Its all about the product quality which translates to the amount of appeal, there is a direct correlation and that is the answer to getting investors to buy in. Change the Mindset.

    - Walk ON

A devoted Ncaa and Madden players since the beginning.

I think the mindset is that if they do anything more than the minimum for sports sequels, then they're just making it harder for themselves for the next sequel. I hope that isn't the case, but the turnaround has to be so fast that this is probably what happens.

Madden and NCAA change rosters every game, the games itself dont really change until very 3 or 4 years really. How many Maddens did it take before they actually made the Superbowl in game more than just any regular season game with some logo midfield?

There is no sustainable business plan for that company. People are increasingly weary of EA products. People are interacting in communities now more than ever before, so these sentiments that were once believed to be isolated are now widespread and contagious. With no confidence among gamers, anybody that researches the industry before they buy will know they are a high risk, low reward prospect. They're also over-extended like General Electric, who had multiple products cross competing, and also over employed. They're gonna limp their way through the next decade until someone swoops in and takes them over, or crash and cannibalize their studios along the way.

I don't buy EA products anymore, I don't like the company for various reasons. I didn't think I would sink the company that deep though.

One problem...the fact that the game world is kind of in a recession is attributing to the lack of sales for new IPs short of something heavily promoted. So gamers kind of do it to themselves sometimes...

True. Not having enough gamers who purchase new IPs inevitably leads to sequelitis.
