EA Shutting Down Servers on More Titles

Posted on Wednesday, July 13 @ 08:23:52 Eastern by

It costs money to keep a game's online modes operational, which is why every so often a publisher pulls the plug on the servers. And when a publisher is as large as EA with such a large portfolio of titles, server shutdowns are a lot more noticeable.

Here's a list of the latest games to have their online modes put to sleep:
  • ARMY OF TWO for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for Xbox 360
  • Medal of Honor Airborne for PlayStation Portable
  • Medal of Honor Heroes 2 for PlayStation Portable and Wii
  • NASCAR 09 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (North America)
  • NCAA Basketball 10 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • NCAA Football 10 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • Need for Speed Most Wanted for PC and Xbox 360
  • Need for Speed Undercover for PlayStation Portable
  • SKATE for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 10 for PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii
  • Madden NFL 10 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
  • NHL 10 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360
If you play any of these titles online, you might want to begin weaning yourself off them, because starting in August, the online modes will cease to exist. Seriously though, if you're still playing these games, buy some fucking new ones for god's sake!

Pulling the plug on 2010 sports games seems a bit unnecessary. Sure, it would make more sense for us gamers to update the library with this year's current title. About as much sense as it makes to charge us full sticker for a roster update and two new (albeit difficult to use) features within the game.

I think you should get at least two-full years of online gaming from a sports game. Why be given a penalty for being economically smart?

"It costs money to keep a game's online modes operational." Yes, that is right, but I think this is EA's way of saying: "Seriously though, if you're still playing these games, buy some ****ing new ones for god's sake!"

Isn't Need for Speed: Most Wanted a launch title? So they're shutting down a 6-year-old server along side a game that's not even a year old yet?

People keep telling me online gaming is the future, and yet this is what I keep seeing? I rather not pay $60 for a game whose components I cannot use a few years later because a company decided to cut costs and close servers to make a a few extra bucks. Go single player games!

If they'd stop making shitty NFS games, I'd stop playing Most Wanted...
