Square Enix has posted up the official PAX Prime 2011 trailer of upcoming multiplatform RPG Final Fantasy XIII-2. In it, we get a look at a few cinematic moments, some plot points using the in-game engine, and several chunks of gameplay. The gameplay pieces are sadly just the type that don't tell us, much, though, as they're slapped together, unrelated clips only of one to three seconds in length.
That's kind of a cop out if you ask me, as a developer can then say "Well we've shown gameplay lots of times," but the clips don't do much to actually convey the experience of playing a game. I can make a highlight video containing two-second clips of my road trip across the US and make it look like it was non-stop action with little time to breathe, think, or zip up, but it doesn't really paint anything close to an accurate picture. Meh, maybe I bitch too much.
Ever sensitive to criticism and tired of being asked to make products that millions people would pay a lot of money for, Square Enix has disabled comments and ratings from its YouTube videos.
Games tend to want to run their trailers much like movies do. In my opinion, that just doesn't work. I understand wanting to showcase several different features of your game, but at the end, the gamer is still being left to make a huge judgment call on the purchase, without much evidence to support a logical decision.
Personally, I think game trailers should show anywhere between the first 2-5 minutes of a game, or a section with full access to the features. Unless your making a bad game, in which case, the movie style trailer is your best bet of hiding your shame.
Looks just like the majority of most game trailers these days. Say what you want about the formula, but all the publishers pump out this kind of thing, not just Square.
Honestly, it looks exactly like XIII, but with timed button presses on certain attacks. Something they probably added because you could play through all of XIII by only ever pressing two buttons. Combat in that game was so boring and repetitive I actually dozed off once while playing.
I'm calling it right now, Serah (or however the hell they misspell the name "Sarah") is the new Hope.
I think exactly what you said Heath, this trailer really doesn't work for me and doesn't make me want to play the game... quite different from The Last Guardian's trailer (which I think it's beautiful and it's also one of the main reasons if not the main I bought a PS3)
Anyway, is this game also called Final Fantasy Type-0 (or something like that)?
Type-0 is actually a PSP exclusive, comes out in Japan on Oct 27. Not yet announced for the US, but it's got "Final Fantasy" in the title so it'll come over one way or another.
As I said before , Mass Effect is an incredible universe. ME1, 2 and 3 focused on Shepard’s tale but set the scene for books and graphic novels to complement that story arc and chronicle the stories of other characters such as Anderson, and the Illusive Man whose adventures feed into the events we have already played through. It’s testament to BioWare’s creation that the tapestry is so rich that even after the main plot and the complimentary plots are taken care of there is... read more...
