While Germany was ruthless against the Russians, the same is true the other way around. The Russians committed plenty of atrocities against the Germans and even other countries not specifically involved. Did Russia not have it's hand in the Poland invasion in which Britain and France declared war on Germany but not Russia? Russia also invaded Finland for no other reason but expansion. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, only until the first enemy is destroyed.

The desperation of the Russians cant really be understated. Not only were the Russians throwing everything they had at the Germans just to wrinkle their feathers, but they were raping and looting and pillaging like a horde as they steamrolled the Germans. Both sides scorched the land as they moved, and they butchered the people on both sides as they went on. The Germans inflicted great pain on the Russians, but the Russians were indiscriminate. The awareness of their wrath spurred an absolutely massive flight of Germans towards the western front.
