I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

First-Year Sales For Black Ops II Projected To Mark A 15% Decline For The Franchise

Posted on Friday, November 30 @ 08:22:08 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

It appears that interest in Call of Duty has finally reached its threshold, as current projections estimate that first-year sales of Black Ops II will be down 15% for the franchise when compared to last year.

According to analyst Arvind Bhatia from Sterne Agee:

Our checks show initial sales of CoD: Black Ops 2 at some retailers were down as much as 20%. Subsequently, it appears sales of CoD did pick up a bit over the Thanksgiving holiday. We think the current sales curve suggests unit sales in its first year could ultimately be down 10 to 15% year-over-year.

If we are right, this would be the second year in a row this critical franchise will have seen units decline. We estimate CoD generates 40 to 45% of the company’s EBIT (earnings before interest and taxes) on an annual basis and it goes without saying that weakness in this franchise is a cause for concern.

Do you think the release of Halo 4 impacted the initial sales of Black Ops II, or are gamers just getting tired of the Call of Duty formula? I'm guessing it's a bit of both, but mainly the latter. Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Mostly just getting tired of the same old thing I'm guessing. Had Blops2 been revolutionary I don't think Halo's release would have cut into its sales much, but considering its changes are relatively minor people are probably getting wary of spending money on more of the same.

Absolutely Black Ops II was affected by Halo. Microsoft outspent Activision every step to launch, plus, Halo has more pull than Black Ops as a brand and holiday deals helped push Xbox 360s to match Halo sales.

It's probably a combination of factors including Halo but the CoD franchise has made it's own bed. For years CoD has been plagued with bugs/glitches, inconsistency, lag, and a general decline in the games narrative. As the quality of the game's predecessors have gone down, so have the sales the subsequent year, and rightfully so.

And don't forget all the cheating... Bungie supports their games (hopefully so will 343), whereas the Treyarch/Sledgehammer/IW did not.

The first 2 MW games were great and BLOPS 1 was pretty good. I honestly think they need to rethink the franchise, but my bet is on MW4 and BLOPS3 coming out next year. I'm hesitant about buying BLOPS 2 and I am really disappointed in MW3 by how little difference there is from 2.

Ok so everyone on here is talking about how Black Ops 2 is "just more of the same" Halo has been "more of the same since 2001. Don't get me wrong I like Halo but everyone here keeps attacking COD as being copy and paste. I agree, but what I think is that Black Ops and 2 are the only two COD games that actually did some new things with. Adding more multiplayer modes, and improving the awesome zombies mode. I will say, that the Infinity Ward developed titles do seem set in their ways and won't do anything different. But you know at least Treyarch tries to give it a "fresh approach". Bungie was guilty of the Infinity Ward complex being set in their ways and copying and pasting. So everyone needs to look at everything here. Halo and Call of Duty are more alike than you all think....

    Here's the difference. Halo - released in 2001. Halo 2, 2004. Halo 3, 2007. ODST, 2010. Reach, 2011. Halo 4, 2012.

Call of duty: 2003. Call of Duty 2: 2005. Call of duty 3: 2006. Call of duty 4: 2007. Call of Duty WaW: 2008. Call of Duty MW2 2009. Call of Duty BO: 2010. Call of Duty MW3: 2011. Call of Duty BO 2: 2012.

Notice the difference? Halo only began yearly releases after ODST, which was a very different game from the other Halo games. It is also very unlikely we'll see another Halo game next year. Activision has been releasing Call of Duty games since THE SECOND GAME in 2005. EIGHT STRAIGHT RELEASES year after year.

    Huge difference, bro.

But at least Activision didn't release a 3 hour expansion pack for $60 like Bungie did with ODST.

You are trying way to hard to justify and defend Activision's yearly release of Call of Duty games that add little to previous releases. The fact that Bungie released a Halo game with a short campaign at full price in no way equates to the harm that Activision's yearly money grab has had on the industry as a whole.

    @nickkmet

I'm not defending Activision. What I'm saying is that people on here complain about Call of Duty being copy and paste but ignore the fact that Halo is just as guilty. Sure there isn't a Halo a year like COD. But wait and see, it will happen eventually.
