Footage Of Half-Life Alpha Build Surfaces

Posted on Wednesday, January 9 @ 12:17:16 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

You may remember the legendary gaming artifact from last month which warranted its own article: a Half-Life alpha build disk. As historically fascinating as it was, it was the content of the disk that everyone was craving, and now those wishes have come true.

The alpha build of Half-Life has been published online, and it didn't take long for YouTube users such as Lambda Core to share footage for those of us who don't want to bother installing the game. The video captures some of the magic that would blow away gamers a year later, but its elementary state shows why Gabe Newell fought for more development time—a move that would pay dividends.

You can see the footage below:

If you'd rather play it yourself, you can purchase the original disk on eBay where the bid is currently at $151.

True. And there's already 47 bids. I foresee a close of $567.39, decided in the last 30 seconds in a bidding war between three parties.

What's the over-under on this? And can I just win the disk?

I remember reading a review of Half-Life when it first came out. the review just ended with the words "get yourself a half-life". probably the most fitting words for that game.

I played it a bit over xmas again and the opening still sends shivers down my spine.

    what a classic!

So what you're telling me is: Playing HL Alpha is a lot like playing HL for PS2.

    I kid, but not really.

I don't get it. I played the PS2 version years after the PC version and it was exactly the same apart from the default inclusion of the HD model pack.

I'm probably wrong. Haven't played either version in a while, just thought I remembered the PS2 version being rougher and clunkier.

The PS2 port is actually a solid port. I just played through it again about a year ago and it still plays well today.

It's incredible how much nostalgia is invoked just by the sound effects from that video.

Half Life was an A+ game, but it spawned countless imitators that made games scripted and took away freedom of exploration.
