Frank O'Connor Talks Halo 5, We Will "Do Much Better Next Time"

Posted on Thursday, January 10 @ 08:02:49 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

343 Industries wowed Halo fans late last year by delivering a product that managed not to botch the franchise and push it forward to new levels of awesome. Fortunately, that doesn't mean Frank O'Connor and the rest of the team at 343i are going to take it easy from here on out.

In a post on Halo Waypoint, O'Connor discussed what is next for the series now that Halo 4 is in the can. With new hardware on the horizon and a well-oiled team at the helm, expectations are high for the fifth chapter in Master Chief's story.
Halo 4 is the best and fastest-selling Halo game in the series. It won critical acclaim. It won awards, from Best Graphics at the VGAs to Game of the Year at the Inside Gaming Awards. We altered the engine. We expanded the universe. We innovated in storytelling, technology, and even marketing.

It wasn’t flawless by any stretch of the imagination, but by most objective criteria, it was a resounding success. So we know we have a lot to do. And we know we have a lot to learn. But we also know that we now have the capacity, the teamwork, the technology and the experience to do much better next time.
In regard to Halo 4's shortcomings and what specifically they hope to improve upon in the next entry, O'Connor added:

There are a ton of things we wish we could done better: Features that didn’t make it into the final game. Glitches that emerged. Missteps made. DLC fiascos. Communication breakdowns.

But there were things that went astonishingly well – the creation of a genuinely competitive AAA studio chief among them. A collection of talent and souls that can do something genuinely amazing on this and next-generation hardware. The overhaul of an amazing game engine – but one that really needed to be overhauled – and an amassed education on systems, people, code and audience that will stand us in great stead for the future.

If there's one thing you'd like 343 Industries to change or improve upon with Halo 5, what would it be? Let us know in the comments below.

I always see the second game of a trilogy being the best. Halo 2, Uncharted 2 etc. I'm pretty sure 343i will wow somehow. They definitely did make some changes to the series and it looked beautiful. How about bringing back dual wielding? I do love me some dual wielding.

Maybe next time they could have a campaign that isn't short and stupid. It was still a good game, though really, it's Halo. It's hard to mess that up gameplay wise. But that said, compared to the other Halo games it left me wanting.

So hopefully they'll actually work on that. I'm sure they'll at least try.

At its core Halo 4 is a good game, but it definitely has a LOT of problems. I really wanted to like it more than I did. The framerate at times dips to unplayable levels (even in multiplayer, which is completely unacceptable considering if the person I'm fighting is looking in the opposite direction I am, his framerate is probably double what I'm playing at) the textures are in most places very low resolution, and most of what constitutes good graphics in the game are just 2D sprites arranged in a way to make the landscapes look 3D.

Aside from technical issues, this is just my opinion but prometheans aren't fun to fight in the least. Everything is perfectly balanced on Legendary, but then promethean knights inexplicably take upwards of 3 to 4 mags to kill. Like I get it, they're tough, but at this point the game is just wasting my time by making an enemy with such a high health pool so common.

Then there are the multiplayer unlocks. A game is not competitive if you're playing against people with access to different tools than you. I started playing a couple weeks ago and not having access to the things that suit my playstyle put me at a huge disadvantage. The loadout system I like a lot, but why restrict it? What's the point?

HALO1 was the best in the series.

I don't want any more Halo till the NEXTBOX comes out. I want more power and graphics memory.

The Didact shoulda simply killed Master Chiefe instead of toying with him.

I am not pleased with the direction that MP as taken, if I wanted to play CoD with Perks, Kill Cam and variable Initial Loadouts I'd play CoD. I play Halo to play Halo, I liked the MP of previous titles but can barely stomach the MP of Halo 4. It breaks the previous MP styles of Bungie and and just mimics Infinity Ward and Treyarch.
The Campaign was well enough, expanded the story, was a bit short and never really felt like it went anywhere, like it was the first Act of a longer game, but I'll live with it as I know the other games are coming.
