G4 Cancels Gaming Programming

Posted on Friday, October 26 @ 12:16:09 Eastern by Keri_Honea

The writing was on the wall this past September, but things are now official according to the TV Guide--G4 has canceled their gaming programming. Both X-Play and Attack of the Show are canceled, with their final episodes airing in December.

As was originally rumored, G4 is getting rebranded into a more "upscale, sophisticated" channel for men, mainly with GQ magazine in mind.

As of now, there is no official word how this will affect the gaming portion of G4TV.com, but it would surprise no one if that gaming center was shut down along with the TV shows. The TV shows have been on a steady decline since Adam Sessler's and Kevin Pereira's departures earlier this year.

While this news isn't unexpected, it's still rather sad to see the end of the G4TV gaming era, and it's even sadder to see so many people lose their jobs.

I thought Sessler left right around the time I cancelled my cable, which would have been around February.

Kevin Rose has been gone since the show changed from Screensavers. I stopped watching G4 about 6 years ago when they changed their entire format. The channel seriously blows now. Not sure if Tommy still has his game sound studio (Tommy Tallerico Studios). I know he has produced sound for recent games, but haven't seen his studio logo on a game since the PS1 era.

Tallarico's now one of the heads and leads of Video Games Live. He's doing fantastically for himself.

With the internet pretty much getting gaming news the moment you think about it, i can see why a gaming channel on TV now is quite irrelevant.

Adam Sessler was the only reason I went to G4TV.com, so it's dead to me already.

I can never say that I simply "watched G4", so much as saying I "watched X-play", because that show was really a bright star among a bunch of shows I really wasn't interested in. I stopped watching it (and thus the channel) years ago, but Adam Sessler talking about how he'd prefer "spending a night with his balls stuck in a cheese grater" to playing some game will always remain on my mind.

I remember when G4 was pretty awesome and just a gaming TV channel. I remember a show called Portal and Cinematech and thought those were cool. Then i stopped watching it when they started just playing Cops and Cheaters and stuff like that. Not surprised they dropped these shows too. Pretty much an even more crap channel now.

I really only watched G4 for Ninja Warrior. No need to explain why. Unfortunately, in this year's American Ninja Warrior, only Brent actually reached Stage 3. He did beat the Ultimate Cliffhanger, and I'm totally nerding out right now, but we really did rather poorly this time around.

Apart from that, G4 isn't worth watching right now unless you want re-re-reruns of Cops. (I won't judge you.)

    NOOOO!!!!.

    Actual Conversation:

    Mom: Can I turn this?
Me: No, it has Candace Bailey. I have to listen to anything she has to say.
Mom: I thought you were smarter than that.
    Me: Nope.

I am stronger than most pretty girls requests (AKA Pussy Power) but not hers.

Man, I am sad about this. I loved her smile, laugh, and running man dance.

While I think the merge with G4 really killed Tech TV, I was still a big fan of Xplay for a while. I'm genuinely a little sad that Adam Sessler is out of the game now, he was great.

Wow, this is pretty sad. I watched x-play all the time when I was a kid. I don't watch much anymore, but thought the gaming portion was the whole basis of the channel.

    Everyone's selling out these days.

Wow: disappointing to read about this, but I kinda expected it.

I really liked the old school, original G4 and the G4 TechTV, back when they were mostly covering Video Game related content.

Plus, I liked their old shows, which all got cancelled or dropped: Pulse, Arena, Game Makers, Icons, Players, G-Phoria, Blister, Filter, Cinema-Tech, X-Play, Cheat & Portal.

I guess Kevin Pereira and Adam Sessler leaving G4, may have been a sign of things to come, in terms of the network ending all of gaming related content.

It's true the internet is the place to go to get all of your gaming media needs, but there was a certain convenience about just turning on your TV and watching the Live Coverage of the E3 and ComicCon Shows that G4 used to cover. You usually never had to worry about bandwidth problems, freezing, crashing, or any other computer/network reception problems.

R.I.P Classic G4. You will be missed.
