Gabe Newell Wants To Bring Dota 2 To Tablets

Posted on Monday, December 10 @ 11:41:52 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Soon you can farm creeps before destroying towers without being at your desktop.

While speaking in an interview at the VGAs, Gabe Newell shared the latest from Valve's laboratory:

We were working on getting Dota 2 running on some tablets, that ended up being kind of a disappointment. But the good news is that tablets are getting faster very quickly, so I think we'll get the kind of performance we want and other game developers want in the near future.

As surprising as it is, it makes sense that Dota 2 was chosen since it fares a lot better with touch controls than the first-person shooters Valve is known for (Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2, etc.). However, Dota 2's demographic is the most hardcore of PC gamers; those who don't tremble at the thought of four other players screaming at them, and losing way more often than anyone is comfortable with.

That said, Dota 2 has a lot of charm. It has over 100 detailed characters ranging in style and very satisfying yet simple gameplay.

For now it's just a plan of Valve's, but as mobile gaming hardware becomes more powerful you can bet Gaben will continue to revisit the thought.

This would be great news, if I played Dota 2...or had a tablet...or a waffle! I'd be happier if I did.

MOBA games have the worst player communities in all of gaming. I pity the poor souls who attempt to play them on a tablet. They must be aiming for the masochist gamer market.
