LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

GameStop Advances On Selling Vintage Games, Ugh

Posted on Friday, September 7 @ 16:28:45 Eastern by

GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines, in an interview with Joystiq, has revealed that the retailer is slowly but surely unrolling its vintage games initiative. Without mincing words the main reason behind it is their overwhelming leftover stock of old games for PS2, Game Boy Advance, and Xbox:
Well, we don't have a lot of NESes or Dreamcasts. That's some pretty old stuff. But we just took Game Boy Advance out of stores recently, about a year and a half ago. Original Xbox, I think we took out of stores in 2009, as I recall. We're reducing the footprint of PlayStation 2.
On that front, I don't believe it should be called a "vintage game" initiative; more like a "last-gen" initiative than anything else. I wouldn't be calling NESes and Dreamcasts "old" when that's what people want.

GameStop, however, doesn't have a straight plan on how to set this up yet, whether it's through buymytronics.com, which is a site of their own, or going through eBay or through their PowerUp Rewards program somehow. Pricing is even more unclear.

The only exciting development is that, from feedback by its PowerUp Pro members, GameStop is considering selling current consoles that can play retro titles, consoles like the Retro Duo or Neo Geo X. Also, if someone wants to buy a title that isn't exactly in one store, they have the opportunity to purchase it through an online hub.

It's understandable that GameStop is attempting to cut in on the retro game market, but right now the vision feels muddled. More on this story as it develops.

My gamestop has never stopped selling Gamecube or PS2 games. The PS2 section is huge, but they don't come in cases, so it's pretty annoying to filter through all the trash.

I'm all for this, as almost all of my original xbox games are broken, or can't be played on 360. DYNASTY WARRIORS 5 HERE I COME.

I can just walk two blocks to an independent store and buy any PS2 game I want for cheap and in the actual case, along with way older games. That, and the people who work there actually know a thing or two about these games. 90% of people I've seen at gamestop don't even know anything past this generation, and that doesn't even include PC games. I mean it's understandable for most people, but when that's your job it's ridiculous.

This. Any GameStop I've had the unfortunate pleasure of visiting in my area (mostly Columbus and northeastern Ohio) have completely stopped selling any games older than current generation. The local, independent game store close to my house, however, has a pretty vast selection of older games and consoles. What I don't understand is why, at the very least, GameStop doesn't offer ps2 and original xbox games when the higher end ps3 and xbox 360 offer reverse compatibility.

awesome-game-store-close-to-our-houses-brofist. The store by my place buys games at 50% of what they sell them for as well, no matter what. Gamestop goes as low as 10% from what I've experienced.

As for your last point, there is both an EB Games and a Gamestop near me and they always have PS2 and Xbox games, but they're always in a bargain bin and 90% of them are just in generic Gamestop cases with the titles written in marker. The real difference is that at Gamestop video games are a commodity, whereas at most independent shops they're a hobby.

My local GameStop in New Mexico, years ago, used to sell NES games for under $1, and SNES games were only a couple of bucks.

As for PS2, Xbox and GBA games, I've never seen a GameStop without them, although the good GBA games and most of the more popular console games are always pricey.

Yeah, it won't be at all obnoxious to take your stack of ancient NES cartridges on trade. I can't wait :\

I built the majority of my collection (and nearly all of my loose NES carts) through FuncoLand and the merger of FL and GS. It was one of the only places I knew that would regularly carry SNES, Saturn, early PSOne stuff, and was one of the ONLY places for a while to pick up any NGPC games - most of those in the liquidation six-pack collections released by whoever had the rights at the time (probably Yaroze). When they took out PSOne stuff, I was disappointed, and I admit I rarely go into the shops anymore.

GS is no more "vintage game store" at this point than Target or any other big-box retailer.

This is great. However, it is funny they bought Funcoland, shuttered it, and years later are now doing this. Which retro game sales was the only appeal of Funcoland anyway. Glad to have more access to classic games and peripherals. For now we have to rely on overpriced specialty stores and ebay.
