GameStop Giving $50 Gift Cards in Light of Deus Ex Fiasco [UPDATE]

Posted on Friday, August 26 @ 11:50:00 Eastern by

[UPDATE] I have confirmation from an anonymous source at GameStop that this is absolutely true. Just bring your receipt and you will get your $50 gift card and Buy 2 Get 1 Free coupon.

Redditor Heartless000 reports that GameStop is trying to mend the Deus Ex fiasco where they took out free OnLive codes from copies of Deus Ex: Human Revolution:

I just got a phone call from Gamestop and it was the manager, they just got off a conference call and everyone who purchased Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PC is getting a $50 gift card and a "Buy 2 get 1 free" coupon as well.

If you don't believe me call Gamestop and ask, just realize they might not have had the same conference call at the same time. If you can verify I'm telling the truth let me know. I'm heading there tonight to pick up my gift card and coupons.

Commenter troncat93 confirms this via an email:

Dear GameStop customer,

Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor's coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor's offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.

For your inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience. Please bring in this email and your store receipt or order confirmation from GameStop.com and present it to a Game Advisor.

Sincerely,

Paul Raines CEO
GameStop

It looks like people who have a GameStop receipt of their PC purchase of Deus Ex: Human Revolution can present their receipt to get the $50 gift card. If this is true, I have to (surprisingly) commend GameStop for stepping in and correcting their mistake and Square Enix's misstep.

I'm still confused as to what actually happened. People were buying PC versions of DXHR and there was nothing in the box because they took the code out?

GameStop employees were instructed on taking out a code that would allow players to access the game via OnLive. With their Impulse service, GameStop finds OnLive to be a competitor, so they broke into the case and took it out.

I'd liken it more to after that creepy guy broke into your home and molested you, your father kicked him out then went and bought you stuff to help forget.

Really, GameStop? It's going to take more than that to gain someone's trust back, I can tell you!

*returns to playing WipeOut: HD and Super Stardust, which he got for free from Sony's Welcome Back package*

Even if they resolve this issue, GameStop is still competing OnLive. They're trying to satisfy their customers and keep them at this moment.

Gamestops probably revamped some clause for their employees so they cant leak this type of info online ever again.
