Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

GameStop Prepping Android Tablet

Posted on Monday, September 12 @ 14:07:18 Eastern by

The outlook is grim for home consoles and retail packaged goods. Soon it will be only mobile devices, the cloud, and digital distro. Although that's still a ways off, GameStop is getting prepared for the retail goods afterlife by releasing a GameStop branded Android tablet.

At the moment, there aren't any details available. GameStop has only said that they'll be calling it a "GameStop certified gaming platform", meaning that despite being a be-all tablet, it's focus will be on gaming.

There are already a number of games on the Android Market available which will presumable run on this upcoming tablet. We wouldn't be surprised if GameStop opened up their own app market of sorts, maybe tying in with GameStop's Kongregate, which already has an app available for Android allowing you to play flash games.

With the gaming market growing ever so strongly on tablets and smartphones, gamers need to be prepared for these devices to eventually be seen on par with traditional gaming experiences. You could be playing a GameStop certified, PlayStation certified, Activision certified, and GameRevolution certified tablet come 2015. (Sounds pretty awesome to me)

"GameStop certified gaming platform" sounds like a shitty tablet name to me. Sounds more like a slogan they would want to slap on others tablets so more gamers will buy those specific tablets... A quick money grab

Gamestop's brick-and-mortar retail power is like a straw sweat hut housing the gaming industry. Rather than expand and upgrade in anticipation of future technologies and demand, Gamestop set the entire ****ing thing on fire, burned everyone, and now they have nothing but a pile of ashes while said industry flies far out of their grasp on the phoenix wings of digital distribution.

And let me tell you: Gamestop ain't getting no down off that ****.

I am going to miss the days of actually owning a product, instead of just renting it for life.

The day the gaming industry abandons actual discs and ownable games in favour of mobile devices, the cloud, and digital distro is the day I stop buying new games. I'm a nerd, always been a nerd, and always will be a nerd, but I am totally not buying into that stupid bullsh*t...
