E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Gearbox Software Insider Cites Outsourcing For Poor Aliens: Colonial Marines Quality [Update]

Posted on Wednesday, February 13 @ 23:20:00 Eastern by

[Update]: According to Playnews, as reported by Darkside of Gaming, Sega America producer Matthew J. Powers said during an Italian launch event that "the game has been developed by Gearbox Software. Other studios [like TimeGate] helped Gearbox on the production of single and multiplayer."

In addition, a moderator on the TimeGate forums wrote that the studio "basically had a hand in everything" and that to know how much of TimeGate's work remained in the final product would require the developers to play through... the final product.

Of course, I can't find a link to the original Playnews report and this is just a moderator on the forums, so who the fuck knows anymore? Bottom line: you dun fucked up Sega/Gearbox/Timegate/Demiurge/Nerve.

[Original Post]: Aliens: Colonial Marines has had a rocky first week and it hasn't even received its review from GameRevolution! Sega and Gearbox Software can't be happy with the product they released on Tuesday, and according to inside sources, it totally wasn't their fault, guys.

While much of this information is unconfirmed, something had to have happened to create such a poor showing for the beloved Aliens franchise, so just take this as one account. In truth, we'll probably never know what happened while Aliens: Colonial Marines sat in development for six years, but whatever we do, we shouldn't blame Gearbox guys. It's not their fault.

According to a post on Reddit, Sega announced the game too early, in fact before production on the game had even started. So right off the bat, we know that it's Sega's fault, and not Gearbox's. The redditor continues to reveal that after many delays in favor of other projects at Gearbox (including Borderlands and Duke Nukem Forever), the studio finally decided to assign the "majority of campaign" to TimeGate studios, best known for Section 8.

When Gearbox got the campaign back from their outsourced studio, they weren't happy with the final product. I'd imagine so. I have great ideas all the time and when I give them to my dog, he does NOTHING with them. So obviously, it's not Gearbox's fault. It's TimeGate's fault. Not Gearbox. TimeGate.

Following numerous extensions, Gearbox finished up Borderlands 2 and then set about redesigning and fixing what they could. "There were some last minute feature requests, most notably female marines." However, the redditor continues, "the general consensus among GBX devs was that there was no way this game was going to be good by ship. There just wasn't enough time."

So again, Gearbox isn't at fault here! If anything they're the victims! They're the victims who over-promised, didn't do the work, and asked for extensions left and right because TimeGate couldn't get the campaign the way Gearbox wanted. Not Gearbox, TimeGate. Those are the guys you want to stab with your pitchforks and burn with your torches.

This isn't because GBX didn't care, mind you. At a certain point, they couldn't risk changing ANYTHING that might cause them to fail certification or break some other system. And so, the product you see is what you get.

The redditor also goes on to point fingers at 20th Century Fox over the story and ends his post with hope for DLC to answer questions and flesh out the campaign. That means, in case you were wondering, that the story isn't Gearbox's fault either.

The moral of the story? Sign a contract, reneg on it repeatedly over the course of 6 years, and then continue Sega's spiral into oblivion by blaming it on everyone else. Bottom line, follow Shaggy's lead.

It's stuff like this that makes me very worried about The Last Guardian & Half-Life 3. When games have been in development forever you start to just know that something is very wrong and the end product is going to suck.

I don't know if the same principle can be applied to Valve and Gabe Newell. Some guys just know how to let **** simmer, and when they finally lift the lid, it's a delicious goddamn stew, and you're left wondering, "what happened to the ****?"

Moral of the story: Magicians make great cooks, and Gearbox makes terrible decisions.

There is something Gearbox/SEGA can do however to attempt to make it up to their loyal customers: give all week 1 buyers the season pass for free. Most people that picked up the game on day 1 didn't know how bad it was due to the review embargo, and giving them the season pass for free would really make it up to them.

I'm not sure what the message to take away from this is. That whenever a game with Gearbox's name on it is complete crap, it is because it was mostly made by someone else? Is that supposed to make me feel more confident in buying games with Gearbox's name on it? I don't remember Gearbox complaining about this before they released Colonial Marines (or DNF for that matter).

This article is bullshit. Gearbox knew this game was gonna flop. Why else would they not allow reviews before release? Because they were trying to make as much as they could off this game. They knew it was a bad game and they still decided to stamp their name on it and have it shipped out to consumers. Fuck gearbox it's very much their fault.

Totally agree. If he really is an employee at Gearbox, he's speaking way out if turn with little knowledge (given that the poster even says he's only been at the studio for a year and a half). Total Bs indeed.

The only victims here are the people that paid money for an unfinished product. Sucks ass. A good apology from gearbox would be to refund people's money.

Pretty sure it was already confirmed that Gearbox did in fact do the single player campaign. I can't give a source because I don't have a history and this fiasco doesn't really interest me that much.

I guess when something's been in development for 6 years pushing back the release date stops being an option and releasing whatever you have so far and washing your hands of it becomes more financially sound that sinking any more money into development. Not that that excuses the terrible game people have now payed money for but at least it's not much of a mystery why.

Pretty much. They just couldn't afford to sink any more money into a game that more than likely wouldn't have sold very well no matter what. What I'm curious about now is how well the upcoming Wii U version is going to sell? With such a low install base and the soon to be common knowledge that Aliens is pure trash, how many Wii U copies are going to end up selling?

I wouldn't be surprised honestly. The Wii U version is just going to sell very, very, VERY, poorly.

Funny that Gearbox is so vocal now that the game is out and the early reviews are very bad. Gearbox is completely responsible for the poor quality of this product. GBX ultimately makes the call when to put a game on the market.

GBX was not only responsible, but they allowed gamers to be mislead with a demo far better than the final release.

Blaming outsourcing is irrelevant to me, because GBX clealry accepted their work and felt the game was suitable for release. So please don't insult my intelligence by trying to argue that GBX, is somehow not at fault. Their conduct is indicative of what is becoming the norm in Gaming development today.

So glad I did not fall for the hype on this one....

Gearbox, do not fall for the golden path of the dark side, we are not so forgiving now that youve made such a name for yourself. Playing the blame game just looks more petty, if you had to gut the game and start again... well you should have apparently.

When I think about every developer condemned by economics and politics to produce C-List material for as long as they stay in the industry and prestigious talent languishing away in Licensed Game Hell with no way out except to turn their operation into a PBS donation drive (hello Obsidian, we'll get back to you in a moment, dear friend) it boils my blood to see a company like Gearbox do what it's done. When Sega had another project on the license (an RPG, told you we'd be getting back to Obsidian!) which they had already funded to some extent, and some of that content had been brought up to a good lustre, they canned it. Obsidian is a developer that gets treatment scarcely better than obscure Shovelware companies. They made a good faith effort to bring a game to market and that's the one which gets canned. Gearbox sits on the goddamn license for most of a generation to work on vanity projects like Duke Nukem Forever and their project is the one which sees the light of day. This is the sort of thing that kills a publisher. Poor oversight and a lack of good judgment.
