Gears of War 3 Adds Another Dimension to All the Chainsawing

Posted on Monday, August 15 @ 19:23:17 Eastern by

I've been pretty clear about my love of chain-sawing people in Gears of War 3's multiplayer modes. Seriously, it's a glorious thing to lay down a smoke bomb, wander in, chainsaw-revved, and come out with someone's guts hanging by a thread to the under-barrel attachment. Nothing screams Gears like a successfully executed blind chainsaw rush.

Now, imagine my monstrous avatar coming out of the TV at you! That's right! COWER IN FEAR!

Executive Producer Rod Fergusson told interviewers at a Gears of War 3 event that the upcoming Xbox 360 exclusive would support the option of playing in stereoscopic 3D. The developer said:

We asked, could we do it? It felt like something we wanted to have. It was a feature we didn't want to be deficient in. When you look at Gears 1, it was what people used to demo HD at the time. It's still fledgling technology. It's still a niche feature. But it was something we could support, so we felt, why not?

Gears of War 3 joins Crysis 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops as one of the few games that support stereoscopic 3D on Xbox 360. The game will run at a slightly lower resolution as a result of the 360's lower-end 3D support:

It was something that came in really late in our process. It wasn't something where we said, OK, we're going to design the game from the ground up for 3D. It was more of a post-process 3D, where we're like, OK, certain things need to be adjusted, but for the most part it generally works.

It's great. I love the qualities it provides, the window into a world. That's what the 3D gives you. Having that depth of character, and being able to see that separation from the reticule and the creatures in the background - it's a different experience but it's a really good one.

As you look forward, in the next Xbox Development Kit coming out of the Xbox, it'll have more support for 3D or more higher quality for native support for 3D. We're supporting the current state of the art for Xbox. Moving forward, the Xbox will be able to take it further.

This is the result of a nearly 6 month delay. Epic Games didn't sit around on their hands waiting for their release date. This does beg the age-old question though: If a game is in 3D on Xbox 360, does anyone have the TV to see it?
