Gears of War 3 Gets Limited and Epic... for a Price

Posted on Monday, May 16 @ 10:37:48 Eastern by

I only allow myself one unneeded, gaudy special edition a year. Last year it was the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood Limited Edition. You know, the one that came with a jack-in-the-box of one of the multiplayer skins?

This year, Epic Games hopes to lure me in with their Epic Edition of Gears of War 3. Bot the Epic Edition and the Limited Edition were detailed today so you can make your preordering decision with the knowledge that the extra $20-$90 actually means something. Here's the run down of the Limited Edition:

Limited Edition ($79.99) - The must-have for fans who want to celebrate the culmination of the trilogy, the Limited Edition includes:
-An Octus Award Box with Octus Service Medal - A 1:1 match in size and weight, this zing-alloy cog-shaped medal replicates the award given to Adam Fenix in recognition of his work on the Hammer of Dawn. [Dimensions: 77mm (3 in.) x 10 mm (0.4 in.)
-Exclusive Unlockable Adam Fenix Multiplayer Character - Each Octus Service Medal replica is engraved with a unique Xbox LIVE code that is the only way to unlock Adam Fenix in multiplayer.
-A fabric COG Flag - Proud colors that once flew above the House of Sovereigns.
-The personal effects of Adam Fenix, including his "Last Will and Testament," the initial Hammer of Dawn schematic, and other Fenix family mementos.

Hey, all of that doesn't sound too bad, right? Seriously though, c'mon Epic. Even the wussy assassins are outclassing you with this offering. Where's that bulky packaging? Where's the needless excess?! Where's the--

Epic Edition ($149.99) - The ultimate collection for hardcore fans who can't get enough "Gears of War 3," the Epic Edition includes:
-A Limited Edition Marcus Fenix Statue - Designed by Epic Games Art Director Chris Perna and expertly crafted by the artisans at Trifoce, this fine PVC statue collectible makes the ultimate living room centerpiece for any true "Gears" fan. [Dimensions: height 285 mm (11.2 in.), diameter 225 mm (8.9 in.), Weight: 1.7 kg (3.7 lb.)
-The Art and Design of Gears of War by Tom Bissell - Through unprecedented access to the Epic Games team, acclaimed author Tom Bissell (Extra Lives) gives readers an incisive behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of the most celebrated sagas in video game history with 96 pages of interviews, photos, concept artwork and more.
-Infected Omen Weapon Pack - Custom multiplayer skins for the game's five starting weapons; Lancer, Retro Lancer, Hammerburst, Sawed-off Shotgun, and Gnasher Shotgun.
-All the contents of the "Gears of War 3" Limited Edition.

o_O 3.7 lb??? Good luck to the Gamestop employee who has to lift those crates off the truck.

Yeah, 150 bones is pretty goddam steep. I don't even care about the statue. The only draw for that package is the book by Bissell.

I'll pass. I'm just into Gears enough to spend the extra money. As it is, I'll probably only pick it up used. Come November though, I'll be spending too much money on whatever the CE for AC: Revelation is. I have the CE for 2 and Brotherhood, so I feel sort of obligated at this point to keep going. Though I have to say, the Ezio figure from 2 is pretty epic.

Harlequin. Though I was a bit disappointed in the the quality. For an extra forty dollars I thought it would have been a bit more elaborate of a mechanism.
