Girl Dies of Heart Attack, Mainstream Media Blames Xbox 360

Posted on Thursday, July 28 @ 13:13:40 Eastern by

If I knew the Xbox 360 had this much influence, I would have sneaked one to Osama Bin Laden.

First, the lie: 13-year-old Anna-Lee Kehoe was "engrossed in her Xbox game" (because one key distinction of mainstream media is not knowing the difference between the Xbox and Xbox 360) when she died. No, actually she stood up and then walked to the bathroom and then called her mother to say she couldn't breathe and then she collapsed.

Okay, but it must be because the infernal Xbox was sending signals of death, right? No, Anna-Lee just had asthma. Well, then the devil Xbox made her so angry or frustrated that she had an asthma attack, correct? Err, that has much merit as saying she died from thinking about that awesome shoe sale at the mall. That's right, she died from summer clearances.

It's just another stupid mainstream story held together by fear-mongering that's become cliché and numb at this point. It's fishing for hits and journalists, who are generally intelligent, know it. Worse, it's exploiting the fact that this girl died from a medical condition. It's sickening, really. I'm not even going to link to the source article.

Because people die due to bad journalism... hey, at least there's a motive.

I really hope they do sue them. The girl said "I can't breathe" not "Omg I can't beat this ****ing level!" I don't know what's more tragic, the girls death or the slanderous reporting.

wow the fact that a 13 year old girl has died is completely overshadowed by how mad you are at the media. your off to a great journalism career when you are so heartless you cant even mention what a tragedy this is, and just report the facts.

Maybe if you actually read about how the media is exploiting the girl's death as being blamed on the Xbox (which is what the writer of the article is mad about) instead of belittling people for "not caring enough" about the girl dying, no one would be jumping on your case.

Game Revolution isn't a news source for real life. People come here to read about stuff related to games. Nick_Tan isn't under any obligations to report facts because he isn't a reporter looking for the next scoop. He and other writers just write their opinions.

i understand what your saying. i know the main point of this article was not about the girls death but about the mass media. i apologize for jumping to a conclusion. i just think its horrible that a young life was taken away.

in response to this article i think its bullshit that they would blame a death on a video game console. kind of reminds be of someone using the "grand theft auto made me do it" excuse

No one is debating that it's horrible the girl died. I think you get that the real tragedy is the exploitation of her death, the flogging of an innocent's haphazard death used to generate buzz and money for a news outlet reaching new lows of credibility.

I totally agree with you. If GameRevolution were a news outlet, we'd have the decency to report the ACTUALITY of the story. The real story is the imbecile suggesting a machine in the living room caused the poor girls death.

And now we've all been flogging you... so I'm going to go write a story about how GameRevolution caused Mitchy's death.... despite the truck having run you over.

In all honesty, no one really cares that this girl died, except the people that actually know her. Happens all the time. Right now as I am writing this comment I bet at least one person in the world is dying of a heart attack, and do you know what, no one will ever hear about them (unless its David Beckham, or a 13 year old playing an xbox apparently) Sure you claim that you care that someone died and it's a tragedy, but saying you care about it and doing something about it are totally different things. Are you helping that one person having a heart attack right now? No you aren't. You're *****ing about someone pointing out how messed up the media is, because they didn't take the time to say, oh this is soo sad, little Suzy died of asthma just like a million other kids. I rest my case.

Yes it is tragic that a young girl died but that's not the point. You have a reporter blaming the Xbox for her death, what exactly did the Xbox do to contribute to any pre-existing health problems if they were there already?

Exactly, nothing. It's just another story that some bad reporter wrote to have some story ready on their deadline, or maybe they just don't like video games and decided blaming a console for a heart attack was logical.

    Someone dying = Bad

Someone dying and media hinting it was because of video games = Stupid

It's not Nick's job to report the news of the death of a 13 year old as sad as it may be. The discussion on the forum is about games and news articles related to such.

Sorry. In my own defense I type very slowly and I use a word processor because I can’t spell worth a crap. I then cut and paste into the comment box. In the time it took me to read the post, read Amorphis and 213EDD comments, write, proofread, edit and post my comment. Your comment and the other four ahead of mine popped up when I hit the add comment button. The screen only refreshed when the new information was added from my end. I had not seen much less read your comment until after I post my own. My comment had been aimed not at you or anyone other than the stupid people in the main body of the post. In other words I did not call you an idiot. I am sorry if you thought I had, but I assure you I had not.

Look a human being died and someone is exploiting it, which is the egregious matter here. This is the result of 24 hour news channels and the need to have "filler". I mean, what if GR had to post reviews and articles at a constant stream, in a television format of course, wouldn't the quality of the subject slide? And that's what news media is now: a parody of itself because of pressure. When John Stewart is correcting T.V. news reporters on a constant basis then they really are slipping.

I can see how this could have been slanted as a manifesto instead of a news article, but I like the irony of making it news. I can also see the point that attaching the girl's death to the Xbox 360 makes the girl's death more "newsworthy", but not only is that vulgarly artificial, but I can't see anyone wanting a newspaper to relate your death to some vague, controversial cause like video games for the sake of publicity. There's an agenda (and prisoner's dilemma) by mainstream media to turn every teenager's death into a potential story about the so-called negative effects of metal bands, TV, movies, rap, and video games, and they're so used to it now that everyone feels like they have to do it to keep up with their peers and to garner conservative viewership. And the overall effect is that we forget that someone died.

Well with all the metal bands, TV, movies, rap, and video games, I am surprised anyone lived through their childhood. But seriously folks, a young girl died which is tragic and the only thing worse than that is what was done to her by the media after she was dead.

    Good post Nick.

Well there is this old ghost story out of redmond that after exactly 360 minutes of nonstop gameplay on an xbox console you go into the bathroom and say 'Jobs' 7 times into the mirror and Bill Gates will appear to grant you a billion dollars which is such a shocking site to behold you instantly stroke out and die. I'm gonna play some reach later and test it out, just know when you see me turn up dead tomorrow the xbox wasn't at fault.

I'd like to add i'm not trying to show any disrespect to the little girls death, it's a tragedy but the media is turning things around because they have nothing better to talk about, i'm even starting to believe half the crap that's in the news is fake just to get views. Using this girls death as a mechanic to stick it to gamers is retarded. Has this reached the television yet?
