God Opens the Heavens, EA Confirms New Mirror's Edge

Posted on Wednesday, July 6 @ 10:41:33 Eastern by

Look, I've said it before, I'll say it again. I disagree with naysayers of Mirror's Edge. Always a point of contention with me. I loved the game. I was so happy that DICE took a departure from shooting everything. People complain about the gunplay being horrible, but that was the whole point! I admit the game's flaws, but I'm extremely happy to hear that EA has confirmed work on a sequel to one of my favorite games in the last 10 years.

Speaking with GameStar, EA Senior Vice President (hmmm, he sounds like he's in charge of something!) Patrick Soderlund confirmed that work was underway on a new Mirror's Edge project:

I loved Mirror's Edge and what we did with ME. We have not abandoned the franchise. And we are working on something, but I'm not willing to talk more than that.

This follows EA Games Label Boss Frank Gibeau's confirmations that ideas for Mirror's Edge 2 were being worked on. He also confirmed that the game would make use of Frostbite 2, Battlefield 3's GORGEOUS new engine.

What do you want to see in a Mirror's Edge 2? What do EA and DICE need to fix?

    Mirror's Edge struggles with the depth of the first-person camera. When I leap off the edge of a building to a highlighted pole, I should have the main character be able to latch on with no problem and not miss by four inches or something, or miss the timing of when to latch and then watch myself die.... and then have to start all the way from the beginning...

    I've never encountered this problem and I even played it without the red highlight thing.

    ME = Mass Effect

    Also, isn't EA going to charge something like $10 (+ retail) to be able to save or something?

    Its not your fault. EA added a 12x multiplier to inform you that they'll now be charging $120 for the online pass code.

    I also really enjoyed this game. The immersion, the scope, it just felt cinematic like few other games I've played. Soldiers bursting through doors, helicopters hovering just over the next building, bullets nailing the pavement next to me as I make a sprinting jump off the side of a skyscraper. Little stuff like my character panting, and grunting as she makes a leap, it was so well done, made you feel like you were inside someones head. This game begs to played on a nice big screen.
    In terms of what to improve for the sequel, I'd say ditch those bizarrely designed cutscenes. Keep up the level of realism. Make it grittier in fact. Nice and dark, possibly levels at night illuminated by the neon of the skyline. Lastly I would say increase the options for alternate routes.
    Also Nazi Zombies never *hurt* a game ;-)

    I have no complaints about Mirror's Edge. It sucks that development depends on sales because of the fact that the majority of people (Not you Stevedave) want stupid ass cookie cutter video games. Developers try to make something more appealing to the majority and the true fans get F'd in the A.
