E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Goldeneye 007 Wasn't Supposed To Have Multiplayer

Posted on Tuesday, August 14 @ 17:58:26 Eastern by

There's another games conference going on in Europe this week, in the form of GDC Europe. There, GoldenEye 007's director Martin Hollis delivered a postmortem presentation on the game. Hollis detailed stories about the game from many of the developers, including Steve Ellis, the dev in charge of programming the now historic multiplayer mode. Ellis wrote:

One of the things that always strikes me as crazy in retrospect is that until something like March or April of 1997, there wasn't a multiplayer mode at all. It hadn't even been started. It really was put in at the last minute - something you wouldn't dream of doing these days - and it was done without the knowledge or permission of the management at Rare and Nintendo. The first they knew about it was when we showed it to them working. However - since the game was already late by that time, if we hadn't done it that way, it probably never would have happened.

Hollis added that many features were "snuck in" during the development process which he associated with the trust between management and the team. "I'm sure there were six-month stretches where no member of Rare or Nintendo management came into the team offices."

I wish games were still like that.

No they are not. There is no way developers are allowed to spend even a few days on some side-project they haven't been approved for. That is insanely wishful thinking on your part.

You seem to have forgotten about companies like Valve where the trust level is so high people pretty much work on whatever they want.

One company and a massive exception at that. Games today on a comparable scale to Goldeneye then are massive, expensive investments. Developers are not afforded the luxury to experiment or, in many cases, ship much later than their stated date (as Goldeneye did).

Agreed, multiplayer wasn't my main enjoyment in that game. Multiplayer was definitely my main course in Perfect Dark though.

Goldeneye 007 was simply incredible. The way it revolutionized console gaming and multiplayer simply blew everyone away. It was one of the single greatest leaps in gaming ever made. Every time I went to Target you had to wait in line to play Goldeneye. That simply just isn't the case anymore. I can't remember how long its been since I've seen anyone playing the demo consoles at Target. They are always empty with some forgettable game on them that no one cares about. It just reminds you how stale gaming has gotten when kids don't even care about the crap the industry is trying to sell anymore.

I remember playing this with my friends who had no clue who James Bond was, other than the name...This was their introduction to the movies sadly enough...

Which also makes me think about the possibility that this could be the greatest "game based on a movie" that ever was. Can anyone think of a better one?

Actually it ironically did introduce me to the James Bond series at the time (I was 11 years old). However, I became in instant fan and went back and watched every single James Bond movie xD

Id seen all the Dalton Bond films and caught a few of Connery and Moores but not many. This game was simply amazing to me... especially killing a man in a toilet stall with a wristwatch laser to the face.

Wow, great move by the developers. Sneaking stuff in was a risk though. Imagine if someone did that today and completely screwed up the game.

    good game!

i dont miss the screen hopping though! all my friends cheated, they were all good at golden eye. then when halo came out and we had lan parties they weren't so good... even now on xbl they struggle to maintain a 1.0 k/d...

needless to say they dont play alot of competitive shooters anymore!
