Grand Theft Auto V Will Sport Three Protagonists

Posted on Thursday, November 8 @ 11:12:15 Eastern by Keri_Honea

Game Informer
revealed their stunning cover art for the December issue this morning, and while it was known that their December issue would be about Grand Theft Auto V, the cover revealed that there will be three protagonists in Rockstar's upcoming game. According to the magazine, these protagonists will be implemented in a "groundbreaking way" while exploring the new Los Santos. Los Santos is apparently also the "biggest open world Rockstar has created to date."

The December issue includes 18 pages just on GTAV, so you can expect plenty of details on just how groundbreaking this will be.

I just want to know why there's not a woman protagonist. Is it because of the prostitutes?

Just as long as I dont have to play a immigrant russian again. Not that I go around murdering people but I could relate to the characters in 3, vice city, and san andreas.

I kinda want a Chinese guy again. I kind felt a stronger connection with the DS chinawars protagonist then any of the others.

"Niko's nationality has been a subject of some debate: prior to the game being launched, it was believed by some that he was Russian and articles have interpreted the character as being from Croatia or Serbia. Executive producer Dan Houser spoke on the matter saying that Niko is "from that gray part of broken-down Eastern Europe", suggesting that Niko's nationality was left intentionally vague or to the interpretation of the player."

Given his history, language and the timing I'd guess he was Serbian. Could be Ukrainian too but the specific references to atrocities committed during a civil war heavily implies he's a veteran of either the Serbo-Croatian war or the Yugoslav wars.

Ha, yeah, I wonder why no female player-characters in any of the games. I don't know, maybe because the preconception is that ultra-violence in games appeals only to men (read: adolescent boys), and GTA is all about ultra-violence.

Of course, looking at the history of video games, maybe it is because Rockstar is simply too far behind in the "jiggle physics" technology race and don't want to embarrass themselves by being behind the times.

Probably because women aren't so much the target audience for these types of games.

Oh yeah, GTA5. It really makes me wonder how they're going to pull this off. I mean, will each protagonist go about business a different way? Will they all work together? Or will it be like Mercenaries where it's the same thing with different little perks?

I wonder too. Maybe it will be divided into acts, or different campaigns or something. I liked how in the Episodes from Liberty City, it would show the continuity of events between GTAIV, The Lost and Damned, and TBGT during the credits (and through some path-crossing). Almost makes you think that they wanted to do a similar three-protagonist thing with the original GTAIV.

It'd be cool if there will be choices. Who could be allies or neutral players in one playthrough could be enemies in another playthrough, depending on player choices. I doubt it'll be that complex, though.

I don't want to start a debate here but... Saints row 3 had the ability to have a female debate of all shape and size. You could corpse surf, make prostitute explode and slam hobos with giant *****s.

It sold millions, worldwide. Think about it, especially you Rockstar.

Saint's Row also featured a personality-less self-insert husk for the Boss. I'd rather Rockstar tries to make actual characters for their protagonists, like they've done since Vice City.

I am curious to see how they approach having three protagonists but you'd think by now they would be able to create a GTA game where you could customize your character from the start.

To me I feel like that could ultimately detract from the sort of narrative Rockstar is attempting to tell. For instance, much of GTA 4's storyline, which I enjoyed for the most parts in between my fits of unbridled violence, would be rendered moot if Niko had been a player created character (unless the player happened to create an eastern European immigrant). Same with San Andreas and Vice City (could have worked with 3 as Claude was basically a blank slate anyway). While the feature certainly fits the Saint's Row games, I don't think it would fit into the story that Rockstar has crafted in the past.

If you can choose gender every bit of dialogue where it would be unnatural to avoid gender specific referents costs twice as much to record or the dialogue is wooden and stilted.

Violent crime is by and large a man's profession. Just look at assault and murder statistics. As Penn Jilette put it, "Guns don't kill people and women don't kill people. Men kill people." Sociopathic and psychopathic personality disorders are far more common among men (unless female socio/psychopaths are generally high functioning enough to know to hide their disorder and possess the skills to do it which is a terrifying thought, much like the realization that the first warning sign a serial killer is pursuing a victim that anyone has a chance of noticing is the victim's corpse) and it's no coincidence that the disorders occur so frequently among violent criminals.

My point, which I should not have just vaguely inferred, is that it is probably much harder to write a GTA protagonist who fits the type, is convincing, and is female. It can't just be Niko Bellic in a skirt. Being relatively lacking in real-world examples one would have a harder time writing the character well.

So you'd never want to see them put a female character in GTA even if she was a lesbian or bisexual? I really don't think it would be incredibly difficult to do especially if they're starting to implement multiple protagonists in their games, it would actually make it less cliche'. I'm not talking about "Nico Bellic in a skirt", I'm talking about a Gina Carano type badass who wants to unwind at the in-game strip club as much as you do, after shooting up a rival street gang.

That's not it at all. I'm not saying they shouldn't do it, or that I'm opposed to it. I'm trying to offer a possible explanation as to why they haven't.

My hope is that you start as Protagonist A, who is killed by Protagonist B (who you play when A is dead), who is killed by Protagonist C (who you end the game playing after B dies).

Having read some of the article last night, you can play as all three switching between them whenever you like whilst not on a mission.

They also said that the total interior and exterior space is bigger than GTA IV, San Andreas and Red Dead Redemption combined.

I can post the link to the PDF if people want to read it?
