"Great Cleansing" At Valve Comes In The Form Of Layoffs

Posted on Wednesday, February 13 @ 13:03:04 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Sadly, a number of Valve employees have gotten the boot and will no longer be working at the company.

This news comes by way of account of engineer Jeri Ellsworth, who Tweeted, “yup. Got fired today. Time for new exciting projects.” In addition, Gamasutra is reporting that a number of other employees got canned as well, noting that this is all part of a “great cleansing” and “large decisions” at Valve.

It's always sad to see people lose their jobs, so we want to wish all those affected the best of luck in their future endeavors. That said, do you think this is all part of a restructuring to prepare for the launch of the Steam Box? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Without a number of slashed jobs, it's hard to tell. Maybe the folks that got fired were evaluated and found to be bad at their jobs. Maybe Valve is starting with a small "great cleansing" before they move on to genocide. Who's to say for certain?

Hopefully they were just trimming the fat. I have no problem with a great company cutting some (possibly under-performing) folks loose in order to maintain greatness.

I highly doubt the Steam Box is related to this. Regardless, Valve touts themselves as a company that lets their workers work on whatever projects they want and don't force deadlines upon them (have you seen the break room? It looks look like a bakery with all those snacks!). For several people to get laid off by Valve, that tells me either they weren't pulling their weight or Valve is starting to run into money troubles.

Well i for one, am very sad to see people lose their jobs in an industry, especially a company like Valve where i'm sure must of been a great place to work at. I hope each of the laid off employee found employment soon or at least able to use their pass experience and continue to work in the gaming industry.

    Best of luck!

I'll buy more hats so they don't lay more people off.

People tend to forget that small lay-offs like this are usually a company firing slackers. People who are under performing, f^cking around on the job, calling in sick all the time, or possibly breaking company policies. With only 25 people laid off I'm assuming that's what this about. Of course everyone assumes Valve is just being a d!ck and it cutting jobs for these poor lost souls...probably not the case.
