Hackers Declare War on Sony, Deliver First Round of Attacks

Posted on Monday, April 4 @ 11:28:11 Eastern by

By now you should have heard about the ongoing legal battle between Sony and infamous hacker GeoHot (along with a few other well-known hackers). If you haven't, kindly step out from under your rock and join the rest of us in society.

The case has been in a sort of stalemate since legal proceedings began in early January. Since then, the controversy has caught the eye(s) of "hacktivist" group Anonymous. Their main goal is to promote "internet freedom" and thus feel strongly that Sony should allow users to do what they please with their console once they've bought and paid for it.

Anonymous released this message this morning, a warning shot hinting at what's to come:

This group wasn't kidding, either. Shortly after this message was posted, a number of Sony owned websites were down due to DDOS attacks. Sony.com and PlayStation.com were affected, and Sony has been scrambling to restore things to normal. And as Sony.com went back up, the PlayStation Network goes under fire, with the @AskPlayStation Twitter account playing it down, calling the downtime "sporadic maintenance".

Anonymous isn't done yet. They released a video echoing their earlier statement and warning of further attacks.

Sony has some pretty powerful enemies that they compete with on the consumer level - like Microsoft and Nintendo - but they may have met their most formidable adversary yet with Anonymous.

Shit is hitting the fan so to speak, and we'll keep you posted on any further incidents as they happen.

What the fawkes are you lookin' at?

They have a point, once you buy a PS3 it should be up to you what you do with it. Jailbreak software is nothing different than freeware or shareware you download from the internet. Denying someone the right to do something to a product they bought and own is, at best, theft on Sony's part.
It would be like buying a brand new Sony TV, then going out and picking up an Apple TV box (Ha!) getting home, going through the set up get it up and running, and then have the FBI kick in your front door and arrest you (Probably piss in your mouth, because that's how American justice works) because your brand new AppleTV box isn't licensed by Sony. Think about it for a minute.

Anonymous is really twisting the concept of "freedom of information" to their liking. To counter JeStar's take on this, as far as I know Sony is not taking any legal action against people who choose to use jailbreak software on their PS3. They're just saying, if you don't play by our rules, you can't play on our network. It's not like they sent a kill code to brick your PS3.

"Freedom of information" doesn't translate into "Sony has to continue to provide a free service to me no matter what I do".

If you want to crack your PS3, you have a right to attempt to do so. If Sony wants to ban you from their network for doing so, I'm sorry, but they have that right too. Just play online on some other network, which you can probably do with jailbreak software.

I fail to see how using a Denial of Service program that was made years before Anon began using it constitutes them as hackers. They can't even do anything else unless a script kiddie show up and uses, yet again, plagiarized material to do anything. That said, those DDoS attacks en masse are somewhat effective for awhile, but like always they are usually inoculated within a few days. What a worthless bunch of manchilds.

That video was by far one of the saddest things I've ever seen or heard.

In the long run, these tw@s are going to end up looking more selfish and petty than they claim Sony to be. By "attacking" and disabling the services and sites that who knows how many other people are using, their actions are screwing over more people than Sony ever would with the people they are "victimizing."

"You saw a hornet's nest and stuck your penises in it?"
    "We are Legion?"
Really? If you're going to threaten a major corporation, you might want to at least come up with a few catchphrases that aren't so laughably lame.

These kids really need to grow up and find something more constructive to do with their time. Yes, I realize the irony of stating that on a gaming website.

@Klandathu: And then... we've never herd Klandathu ever again...

Also, Annonymous been around for more then a decades, apparently. Always using the "we are legion" catchphrase. It's just only recently they've been actively political on things.

@Lien: Not 100% sure what you're getting at in your first sentence. If you're saying that I'm just some guy and who cares about my opinion, then you're right. I am just some dude voicing my two cents.

As far as your second statement goes: I'm not questioning how long these guys have been around or anything like that. "We are Legion" just sounds a little played out. I've heard it more than once in several movies and video games and the like. Again, that's just my opinion.

@Klandathu: Oh it's a joke cause they are hackers... and you are calling out to them you know, like in a conspiracy?... oh nevermind...
@Ranim: Actually, the guys fawks mask anonymous movement started in late 2006. The old "Picture not available" anonymous movement started after 4chan launched it's site in 2003 (dear god, jut one year and a half and they been here for a decade! brr). But like i said, they didn't get political till recently with the whole scientology business. I can go far back and point at the first web pages that had a default "anonymous" comment accounts but that's too far fetched.
As for the "We are legion" part, it's originally quoted from Mark 5:9 and...

I can perhaps admire their motives, but launching constant hacking attacks on networks and systems that average joes (like me) use day to day is not going to garner them any points in my book. I also believe that along with the, "We are legion" quote there should have been, "They may take our lives, but they'll never take our freedom!"
