E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Hardware Manufacturer Excited To See How Steam Box "Expands The PC Landscape"

Posted on Monday, March 11 @ 19:49:00 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Boldly going where no PC has gone before.

When speaking to Gaming Blend, Associate Marketing Manager Alex Chang expressed excitement in how the Steam Box is moving the PC market to a new frontier. He said:

It’s kind of expanding the PC landscape in terms of slowly pushing the gap between the average console users that may not ever want to touch a PC versus some of the hardcore PC gamers that will never want to touch a console,

During the past decade the console gaming market has blossomed with both growing developer and consumer support. Meanwhile, PC gaming recessed into what many view as a platform for only the most hardcore. It also has continued to evolve at a pace that consoles simply can't with significant technological and gameplay-related improvements.

Needless to say, console gamers who haven't stayed up-to-date with PCs are in for a surprise when they see what is possible here and now, and that's the impetus behind the Steam Box. It's going to bring the unobstructed potential of PC gaming to those who don't want to fool with hardware. It's also going to bring the sharpened Steam platform to the living room. It's no surpise that one of the world's most successful electronics companies is anxious to see what it means for the industry.

People can say how the PC platform has been marginalized, but the simple fact is that its user-base has been making leaps while the consoles have been steadily growing. Mostly due to MMOs, but also because starter-ups can't handle the obstacles that big budget corporations can overcome, like stupidly long authentication processes. The biggest problem with the PC industry is how there are too many variables to consider when you're upgrading hardware in a computer. On the other hand, consoles are suffocating on a vicious cycle of aggressive marketing budgets that both require many units to sell for success, but also strips developers of the creative process entirely because experimenting increases your margin for error, and then forces the entire market to escalate so it can maintain its position in an already high risk-weak return gaming industry.

Valve has some serious balls to bring together PC and consoles. This was taboo even 5 years ago. While PCs will always be cheaper to develop on, and one step ahead technologically, consoles still have a spot in the industry. PC gaming has boosted in the past 5 years because cost of hardware is going way down and you don't have to upgrade every year anymore. Build a $3K rig and it will run you a good 5+ years.

I am in no way poor, but $3K for 5+ years is too expensive when compared to $400-$600 for a whole console generation. Make no mistake, I'd be willing to make that kind of investment if the console exclusives (from Sony and Nintendo at the very least) made it into the PC, and I don't see that happening very soon.

Can get a great rig for $800, dont spend thousands unless youre planning on capturing video or doing non gaming high end graphics programs.
