Ico, Shadow of the Colossus Creator Wants to Make an FPS Game

Posted on Friday, March 11 @ 09:51:07 Eastern by

Not owning a PS2 meant missing out on a lot of amazing games. Notable among those was Shadow of the Colossus. Team Ico is at the bleeding edge of creating games that also qualify on art. But when I think of art, I don't think Call of Duty.

That's why it worries me when Team Ico's creative director, Fumito Ueda, recently said he'd like to work on some very different games.

If I get the chance, there are things that I'd like to make or challenge myself with, yes. For instance, I'd like to make 2D games. Right now, that's what I'd like to do - it may change tomorrow. Oh, and an FPS. Yes, I'd like to make an FPS. I play quite a lot of FPS games in my free time.

This man needs help. 2D games are fine. Make those. Please! Please don't make a shooter.

Ueda also commented that Ico and Shadow of the Colossus didn't sell well because they weren't good games. This poor, poor man really needs to be told just how wrong he is. Someone please let him know that he's wrong. Steer the guy in the right direction.

I would be curious to see what changes he would bring to the FPS genre.

Why is a FPS such a problem? Bioshock and Bioshock 2 are definitely phenomenal and are the most philosophical and literary games we've seen from any generation. The Half Life series is plenty smart, and portal is a work of science-fiction art. One game I still wish they'd reboot and do well is XIII (thirteen), the comic book conspiracy shooter. Really awesome concept and art, really bad execution. It could have been so good. And where's the Psi-Ops sequel?

What the hell do you mean "Please please dont make an FPS"? What a silly thing to say... FPS games are wicked (which I understand is purely subjective). and it would be awesome to see what kind of twist a dude like that could put on the genre.

Honestly, these days, with all the new tech & **** coming out, all the new multiplayer games, online support, etc etc, it really seems like going back to 2D would be kind of a waste of talent, not to mention a waste of available technologies and opportunities. I dunno, man, 2D games are sweet and all, but they had their shot, things have moved on to bigger, better, flashier. In my humble opinion, of course...
