Is Batman Going Back To Before Arkham Asylum?

Posted on Wednesday, July 11 @ 15:28:21 Eastern by

WB Games will apparently take Batman back to the time before Arkham Asylum for the next game in Rocksteady's Arkham series, if reports from Variety are to be believed. In an article posted centering around DC Entertainment's push to bring more of their core heroes together in the media, Variety states that they've learned from sources that Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment will bring a few of them together in the next Arkham game.

Marc Graser writes:

The new, highly stylized title is being developed as a prequel that revolves around Batman's first meeting with the Joker. It's based on the Silver Age of DC's comicbooks from the 1950s when the Caped Crusader teamed with other heroes like Superman and founded the Justice League of America.

The new game would likely bow in 2014 at the earliest. The title was not discussed during the E3 games conference in June, with WBIE focusing on unveiling "Injustice."

While a prequel sounds all well and good, I'm wary of Batman ditching the "Arkhamverse" in favor of more campy 50s-waters. Yes I know there's a strong difference between the 50s comics and the TV show starring Adam West, but it's a hard line to cross as a fan of what Batman has been doing in modern times.

This could be the only way a game with Superman in it wouldnt suck. Dont think of it as a Batman game, think of it as a crutch for the man of steel.

I call BS on Variety (didn't they shut down a few years ago?), or there is deliberate misinformation going on. There were too many easter eggs in Arkham City implying where the 3rd game was going and that it would be a continuation of the storyline. If this prequel rumor did turn out to be true, I would surely think it was for a different game from the Arkham series.

Yeah I think that's partly why I'm so reluctant towards the idea of a 50s era Batman in the Arkham series. There were so many threads to other (more awesome in my mind) Batman stories in Arkham City.

Dark Knight returns graphic novel, Knightfall, to name a few that would make pretty nice games.

Before the Comics Code was implemented in the late-50's, Batman was kind of a badass. He killed more dudes than you can shake a stick at. Murder was pretty commonplace in Batman's universe in the first 15 years or so.

But if Superman did happen to get involved, I'm sure the edgy/dark side of 50's Batman would get toned down, and Rocksteady would just end up with guano on their hands (see what I did there?).

I'd be okay with a 60's camp version based on the ABC Batman TV show if it was LEGO. I still haven't bought Arkham City so I don't know about these easter eggs LawnGnome is referring to, but I LOVED Asylum so I hope they don't take a Schumacher turn with the games.

I would actually love to see a prequel a la Year One (after they finish the Arkham Trilogy). The Long Halloween and the Under the Red Hood storylines could make for sweet games, too. I don't like the idea of shoe-horning in other DC characters. Batman is at his best when he is a dark twisted loner. Unless of course he is kicking Superman's ass.

Just hearing another Batman games makes me happy. They could go a children route with The Brave and Bold, but don't know how that would turn out.

The art style and universe setting of the Arkham games are probably my least favorite parts about them. Amazing gameplay structure and the stories are great, but I wouldn't mind a change in tone and scenery.

I would prefer then work with either the potential Hush story, or with Azrael coming out trying to usurp Batman or a combination of that. Do they really have to force in another Joker-based plot, and THEN try to force in a Justice League meetup?

*SPOILER ALERT* There were distinct easter eggs in AC that basically revealed that the main bad guy in the next game would be Scarecrow, also referencing him getting revenge for the events in AA. I just don't see them abandoning that storyline for a prequel.
