LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Is Nintendo's Next Console Going To Be At E3?

Posted on Thursday, April 14 @ 13:30:53 Eastern by

The Wii's big selling point was motion controls. When everyone saw people swinging their arms to control Wii Tennis, jaws dropped. Did you know that I camped out of the Gamestop across the street from my university? That wasn't even to buy the damn machine. That was to preorder it!

Certainly the Wii was fun. It sold a ton of units, but it's underpowered and inundated with shovelware at this point. You'd have to dig through tons of bullshit to find that one Nintendo game you want. Issues with third-party support, graphics capabilities, and high-definition graphics missing in action band together to mean one thing:

Time for new hardware!

Game Informer is reporting that several sources have confirmed that the next Nintendo console will be revealed at E3 2011. The same sources say that the next-generation home console will play games in HD resolutions. The system is apparently slated for a late 2012 launch.

While there is no hard information on the console's specific graphics capabilities, the same sources that are informing the press about the project's existence are claiming that the hardware will be competitive with the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Oh boy, oh boy! New Nintendo hardware? This E3 should be awesome! Nothing makes for a fanboy fest like something new from Ninty! With the PS3 and Xbox 360 slated for 10-year hardware cycles, will Nintendo's Wii HD, Wii 2, whatever you want to call it be set to dominate the next generation?

Considering I just dropped $200 to get my wife a wii for Christmas, the new one better be backward compatible. That's the one strike I have against my PS3, since my new TV comes up short in the non-HDMI hookup department. Hate having to switch between hooking up the PS2, the VCR, the Dreamcast, and the Saturn. If my 360 weren't backward compatible, throwing in my old Xbox would have me climbing the walls.

^ that's assuming Nintendo changes their shovelware policies and there are games of high enough quality to convince me ANOTHER system is worth it, and these rumors turn out to be true, of course.

Competitive?? If anything it should be leaps and bounds ahead of the Xbox 360 and PS3 if it wants to have a chance, otherwise it'll go the way of the Dreamcast.

Unless it has something to top the PS3's Move, I have little interest in it right now. I'll take a 3DS instead.

This is at least Nintendo's chance to return to making actual video games rather than exercise equipment.

    Super excited about this news!

The BC compatibility would be awesome if Nintendo did something on the level of the Dolphin emulation scene.

And Klandathu, I get the cut of your jib, but how anyone could say the Wii didn't have "actual video games" is a mystery.

10 bucks says this spart the next competitive game of leapfrog between The Big Three. Nintendo will come out with the Wi 2.0 in late 2012, and without question, Sony & Microsoft won't be far behind. I'd bet in 2013, maybe 2014 we'll have the next batch of, some would say, real consoles. And since the PS3 & XBox are already miles ahead of the Wii, the the PS4 & XBox 360-2 will be more powerful by leaps & bounds than the Wii 2. Methinks Nintendos dominance is stuck in the handheld market, the home console is in the realm of the other 2. In my opinion.

@MrrClean: I'd say that Nintendo just has to put the system out there and publish Mario, Zelda, etc games. They'll maintain their position. The Wii seemed to set records for what was new about it and unless Nintendo's next machine can do the same thing I doubt it'll outperform the other two like it did before...

Of course the 360 and PS3 have been outselling the Wii quite a bit anymore. Can't imagine that $50 price cut won't help it in the short term though.
