Is This What The PlayStation 4 Controller Looks Like?

Posted on Sunday, February 3 @ 10:36:00 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

What you see above isn't the official PlayStation 4 controller, but it very well could be what it ends up looking like.

Supposed leaks from those who have received PlayStation 4 development kits have resulted in some interesting details about Sony's next controller. If the rumors are true, it's the first Sony controller to make any radical changes to its original formula in 1994. A user on Reddit decided to compile the information and draw a mock-up including all the realistic possibilities. Voilà, the image seen above.

The controller is said to have a share button on the front face which works in tandem with the console's progressive video and screenshot capturing features. As such, the above concept image has a share button so you can hop straight into the share section with a touch of a button.

Additionally, a small touch pad similar to the one on the back of the Vita has been thrown into the empty space between the d-pad and face buttons. If it's as seen in the image it's on the small side and raises question as to how useful it would be for gaming experiences.

The concave analog sticks are a departure from the convex-shape of the traditional DualShock. Many Xbox gamers argue that this design allows for better control of the analog sticks, presenting an even higher level of precision in shooters. If Sony really makes the switch then you're sure to hear plenty of opinions from those who want them changed back.

Lastly, the d-pad is very similar to the one found on the Vita, which is a good thing. The Vita's d-pad has great tactile feedback and rolls between directions with little resistance. Fighting game fans would be joyful.

The PlayStation 4 is expected to be announced on February 20th, and there's a good chance we'll see the new controller during the presentation. In the meantime, what do you think of the concept above?

Looks pretty slick to me. Don't know why people are so hung up about controller innovations. As long as the CORE of the controller isn't touched...why not? All the face buttons are there, the two sticks, the shoulder buttons, no big deal to me.

Add asymmetrical analog sticks and a small touch screen (for typing and item-select type of crap)

I would not complain about having that in my hands. It's not a huge departure from the past to burn me, and it implements enough changes to bring it towards today's tech.

Agree though that a touch-pad that small seems sort of useless.

What would be the point of a track pad in the middle of the controller?

Now just swap the dpad and the left analogue stick and it'd be perfect.

...Wait, i think someone might've done that before.
