Iwata: Wii U Sales "Not Bad," But Not As Successful As Wii

Posted on Monday, January 7 @ 11:53:52 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

While not as insanely popular as the Wii, Nintendo's tablet-centric console is "selling steadily" according to Nintendo president, Satoru Iwata.

In an interview with Reuters, Iwata explained that "at the end of the Christmas season, it wasn't as though stores in the U.S. had no Wii U left in stock, as it was when Wii was first sold in that popular boom. But sales are not bad, and I feel it's selling steadily.”

In regards to the challenges that come with launching two different SKUs, Iwata went on to add:

It was the first time Nintendo released two models of the game console at the same time, and I believe there was a challenge with balancing this. Specifically, inventory levels for the [Deluxe] package was unbalanced as many people wanted that version and couldn't find it.

What kind of year do you think the Wii U will have in 2013? Will it be rife with success, or will Nintendo's console get crushed under the weight of competing next-gen hardware? Let us know in the comments below.

I'll be getting one soon, but what are the exact differences between the Deluxe and non? Is it an actual performance difference or just "whats included"? I'm actually excited to get one when I can afford it, the GamePad has a bright future if developers utilize it.

The Deluxe comes with bigger hard drive space and it has some other addons that I cannot remember currently.

I think it has potential but its not quite there yet. There is nothing on the system that is interesting me yet, and its not showing its power over this gen yet. Gamepad could be interesting but it still feels a little gimmicky to me.

Def not as into this as i was the Wii. Wii was not that powerful, but motion controls were new and fun back then.

I don't think the Wii-U will ever capture what the Wii put out, but I think it will stand well on its own.

The Wii U just needs more games. Once the games come, more units will be sold.
