E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Japanese PlayStation 2 Shipments End

Posted on Thursday, December 27 @ 23:13:18 Eastern by Heath_Hindman
"Here, Heath, just get your own present and that'll be from me and your mom. It's a lot, but you're an adult now, and you... well, you haven't cost us as much as our other kids. Just go buy your own gift. Happy birthday."

My father handed me $400, in part as a birthday gift and in part for not being in jail or flipping vehicles. I already knew what I was going to get. I drove to the mall and grabbed a PlayStation 2, Shadow of Destiny, and a DVD of some freaky anime porn. It was the best birthday of my life. Over 155 million other people (worldwide) have stories similar to mine. To date, the machine has sold nearly 22 million units in Japan, handily outselling every other console currently in production, with the one and only exception being the Nintendo DS. Even the mighty Wii with its memorable launch madness and being sold out everywhere for months can't match the lifetime performance of Sony's second system.

After nearly 13 years in production, Sony today announced that PlayStation 2 shipments in Japan have stopped. These days, I mostly play my PS2 games on my 60-gig PS3, and yet, I feel like a part of me just died.

It hadn't been a chart-topper in years, but it was always still hanging around with respectable sales figures for a system well over a decade old. Last week, however, it didn't manage four digits, and SCE has decided that 2012's holiday season should be the PS2's last. Perhaps this is what the Mayans were seeing. Truly, it's the end of an era.

Some of the most anticipated games of the past years have been HD versions of legendary PS2 games. Even now, there are PS2 games that countless fans are waiting to download on the PlayStation Network or buy in re-release form. A great many people voted for Persona 4: The Golden as the best RPG of this year, and it's a port of a 2008 PS2 game.

Grand Theft Auto had a cult following, but was really pushed into the mainstream by Grand Theft Auto III on the PS2. God of War, Disgaea, Killzone, Kingdom Hearts, and Ratchet & Clank got their starts; Okami, ICO, and Shadow of the Colossus showed the world how games can be art, and JRPG fans were practically swimming in a constant stream of high-quality releases.

Minutes before posting this story, I was looking at Firefox tabs containing Final Fantasy XI information, as I was curious about playing again, which would require me to yep get out my PS2. Square Enix's MMORPG was the first for a lot of Final Fantasy fans who'd never played an online game, and to this day is a rarity in the gaming world, as it allows simultaneous, interactive play between PS2, PC, and Xbox 360 users. Oddly enough, the game will receive another expansion in March of next year. If you had told someone a year ago that the PS2 would get a piece of new Final Fantasy software before the Vita would, you may have been laughed out of town. And yet, here we are.

Share your PS2 stories below. And long live the king.

I bought my PS2 along with Smuggler's Run (meh), Twisted Metal Black, and Zone of the Enders with wads of 20's from my first job.

My first experience with the PS2 that I remember? Playing Symphony of the Night (obviously not PS2) on my best friend's PS2 in his dad's camper driving down I65 to the beach.

    Screw you, nostalgia.

My earliest memory was first putting my hands on DMC at a Babbage's kiosk and realizing that I was playing something that had never existed before. I played for maybe two minutes, but I fantasized about that gameplay for weeks. Nowadays, almost everything about the game is considered standard issue, but back when it came out DMC was a freaking revelation for third person action. Probably one of the most under-appreciated games when it comes time for "most influential" lists.

That means the PS2 will stop shipping worldwide soon. I still have my receipt (yellowed and everything) from my first PS2 purchase when I was 12. August of 2003. Was promised one if I babysat my sisters for a whole summer and didn't get any complaints from neighbors. This was also a bad memory because my dad bought one used thinking he was saving $100 when the PS2 JUST dropped down to $200 and he was only saving $20 but wouldn't believe the sales clerk. He forced me to buy Syphon Filter 2 for PS1 instead of a PS2 game when it was the same price. I ran out of the store crying and had to borrow PS2 games from a neighbor (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and Stuntman).

Not being able to open a brand new box, tear open the foam wrap stuff, pull out the cardboard inserts, flip through the manual, pull out the controller and fight the twist ties...that is the most fun about getting a new console. When I bought home that used PS2 in that generic Funcoland box (before GameStop bought them out) I felt like I was bringing home someone's used sweater that they never washed. That was a serious walk of shame back to the car.

I got a slim in 2005, but loved it,got Budokai 3 with it and DMC a few days later. It had awesome games and such a huge freaking library of games. It was truly a great system.

I re-brought a PS2 for $50 this year because my old slim couldn't read the discs anymore. I gotten a lot of great games for it too like Shadows of the Colossus, MGS 3, Nocturne, and the Persona games. I need to track down a copy of the Disgaea games.

I must have had five or six PS2s in total. I loved that system so much I gave a bunch of them to friends just because I wanted more people I knew to have one, and then I'd end up getting one to replace the one I just gave away.

That was the greatest system Ive ever owned. SSX consumed my life and was absolutely incredible. I also played my first online shooter with SOCOM and made friends from that game that I still play with today. And ****, who could forget about the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo in ZoE lol. Ahhh the memories.

My family never had a ton of money, but one of the things my parents wanted was to get my brother and I a great gift for each Christmas. That was how we got our Sega Genesis with Mortal Kombat, which to this day still rings as the greatest Christmas ever. Years later, we had some serious financial issues and it was a stressful year, but my mom still surprised me with a trip to Best Buy where she'd put a PS2 on hold somehow, even during the first-year holiday rush. We took it back home with Tekken Tag Tournament, and the rest is history. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to make a phone call and thank my mom and dad for always being awesome parents...

Absolutely love the PS2, easily the best console ever in my eyes (followed closely by the SNES)

To this day it still has the greatest library of games (both by quantity and quality wise) my only gripe with it was that I've had to buy 5 of them due to them not being able to read discs anymore.

When i think of the playstation 2, i'll always think of Dave Chappel claiming the aliens made that systems. ("what? ya think the japanese were THAT advance, did ya?").

I got mine in the summer of 2002 after almost a year of toiling on a paper route. I picked up MGS 2 and Red Faction. I remember getting home, getting that slick black monster out of the box and hooking it up to a big screen tv. First game I played was MGS 2 and I was blown away by the graphics. That was my summer of 02. I played MGS2 forward and backwards all summer long, stayed up late into the night playing. The years following I had great memories of GTA, Killzone, Kingdom Hearts, FFX, MGS3, and a game that I became enamored with Silent Hill 2. I played Silent Hill 2 like I did MGS. I have tons of memories of my experiences with my PS2. Long live the King!!!!

The end of a game generation... all the Dynasty Warriors games I played, NCAA titles, Red Dead Revolver, the last Final Fantasy game I'll ever play. Damn... I shall miss you, you were the last console I ever bought.

I got my PS2 with The Bouncer and Onimusha. I didn't have enough money for a memory card so, for a week, I had to play both games from the start to get back to where I was. Needless to say, I got really good at them and which is why I won't play those games anymore. I still have my original PS1 and my original fatboy PS2 w/harddrive for FFXI. I agree that the PS2 is probably the greatest console ever. It is the end of a generation and a console that defined my early twenties.

My PS2 is rather ancient. Someday it will break down, and then what will I do? Many of my favorite games are PS2 only.

Many of my fellow Dreamcast fans have a sort of unreasonable hatred towards the PS2, as they believed it "killed" the DC. And while it's true that Sega threw in the towel after the holiday season of the PS2's launch, in the grand scheme of things, that was really only the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. And the fact remains, the PS2 was a hell of a system with an absolutely peerless library.

If you're going to get beat, get beat by the best. At least the Dreamcast had that honor.

Actually, the new FFXI expansion will not be available for the PS2. It's PC and 360 only. As to the machine itself, I still have mine hooked up in my entertainment center along with my 360 and PS3. Granted, it hasn't seen much use lately, but I still have quite a few games for it that I like to pull out now and then.

Have kept my original launch console operational to this day. Got a slim PS3 so I don't have backward compatibility, le sigh. But, again, I never throw out a console, and know how to fix them when they break. Basically it's easier to say what consoles are NOT in my house. Also don't trade games very often, so I think I still have a copy of The Bouncer on my rack.

PS2 was my favorite system, and this generation approaching will be the 5th that I have lived through. Twas Christmas Day 2003 (a little late, yes), my brother and I had been hoping that MAYBE this would be the year that my parents would buy us the console we had been dying to own for a few years to that point, and it turned out to be true. My parents would always put our presents in our own seperate piles, and whenever there was a big present, it would be sitting there on it's own over-looking the small piles. Medal of Honor Rising Sun was in my brothers pile and at that stage we obviously knew that the big present was a PS2, just like we wanted. That was the first console shooter I ever played and let's just say that my first year of high school was spent enjoying video games like I never had before (my parents were aware of this, they said I could only play on weekends). Need for Speed Underground, LOTR: Return of the King, Metal Gear Solid 2..... memories.

Gotta give credit where credit is due, the PS2 truly was (and still is) a great system. The fact it was produced for so long shows just how strong it was.
