E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Kickstart "Gaming In Color": New Documentary On LGBT Gamers

Posted on Monday, March 11 @ 17:04:54 Eastern by

Produced and filmed by Anne Clemens, the upcoming documentary "Gaming In Color" plans to shed light on both female and LGBT issues of the gaming industry, which tends to cater its titles toward the 18-34 straight male demographic.

Over numerous console generations, this has created a culture in which video games seem to be exclusively meant for this particular group, though the audience for gaming, the film describes, is far from being only for "white, male, heterosexual, mid-twenties loners." At the same time, gay-bashing is a frequent occurrence in online gaming, which Matthew Michael Brown, Digital Marketing Coordinator for Sony Pictures, recognizes:
Gay gamers are bullied especially in the virtual world because it’s a power dynamic. It’s a society within a society.
Gaming In Color hopes to expand on this growing issue and highlight the people who are working towards changing the video game industry and expanding it to include a broader range of gamers. Gaming in Color has launched a campaign on Kickstarter, to which you pledge a donation here.

"I respect Xbox Live and online gaming because it's one of the few places FREE SPEECH actually exists. I've gotten into COUNTLESS arguments with racial and sexist slurs thrown back and forth until we both burned out."

    Sounds like something worth protecting.

I can see that you're all hot and bothered by the idea, but consider the importance of identity when you aren't a privileged white/heterosexual/male.

I was all with you until you brought privilege into this. I am absolutely for community, but just because I'm a straight white Anglo-Saxon protestant male going to private university on father's dollar with an expensive British luxury car and chauffeur doesn't mean that 12 year olds don't call me a, and I quote, "gay *** ****** nazi jew commie Canadian bastard."

If any one of those things were true, I wouldn't be allowed into a single one of the nine country clubs and secret societies that I'm a part of, which would kill my sense of community as well. So I definitely feel for my LGBT brethren, and wish them all the best in the creation of this project. Just as long as it's far away from me.

White males in America are the most oppressed group in America. They've allowed foreigners to take away ALL of their "rights".

I'm not a White male and I see it. Non-Whites can say just about anything racial they want and NEVER be scrutinized. So long as they don't insult the "L G B T" - a bunch of CONFUSED individuals.

LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender. Although we primarily associate the word "Gay" with men who are sexually attracted to other men it can be used to identify anyone who does not pursue heterosexual relationships in a traditional way. The acronym, LGBT, may be over used but it's a whole lot better than someone calling myself or anyone else a ***got or a ****, or other derogatory slurs. However, if you feel a strong need to use your expletive filled vocabulary online, by all means go ahead. This convention is not about taking away your rights of free speech and it's not only open to people from the LGBT community. It was created by gaymers who wanted to create an inclusive gaming environment for themselves, other gaymers, and anyone else interested in gaming culture (including straight people). And yes, many people commit suicide every year in this country but most of those people are teenagers and a majority of them are homosexual.

Look, it's really simple, trust me. I just want to play a game and know that if there are romance options, or it's a game where sex and sexuality are an integrated component of the experience, I won't have to keep on feeling this sense of "disconnect" or perhaps even exclusion. It does mean a lot to me to play games where I see just how much the developers actually tried to give an inclusive experience - now, I know that gay "options" may not fit in given the plot, and that's one thing - but in most cases the player directs the course of the romantic or sexual outcomes, and yet for there not to be an option to take a gay path for a gay player is weird. Imagine if all games, all the time, only had same-sex options, how would straight players feel? Gay players have been enduring that feeling all along... time to change, and as true gamers most of you should be pushing for this or at least appreciate the inclusive factor.

Listen BigTruckSeries, if white people are such an oppressed vanishing minority in this country maybe we can put them all on reservations... I hear that helps.

lol Its not just gay people who are bullied. Play wow for any amount of time and you will find people acting rude and downright mean to each other and even more so if you arnt the best on the server.

The only reason Gay Gamers feel bullied because they are gay is because if they are openly gay it gives someone a reason or topic to hate them with. Same goes for if a women is bullied. A Noob. A kid. A old person. Post a subject about yourself and its likely you will get bullied for it.

I dont live this way but anonymity and others lack of self worth causes people to act negatively to each other. Has very little to do if your gay.

We live in societys that make is hate something that is going on in it and in turn we turn our own hatred to other things in society. We even use hatred as a form of endearment to try to make fun out of it. We truly are a sick society, and thats why I encourage everyone to treat each other well and to always strive to be a better person.

Being an 18-34 straight male, all I can offer is my own experience. I try not to discriminate against any particular group of people, and I make a conscious effort to be accepting of anyone who openly describes themselves as outside of my peer group. But when no one does, and I'm playing with an anonymous group of people, I tend to assume they're all like me.

And in those situations, I don't call things "girly" or "childish" or "geriatric" or anything like that. Racial slurs aren't part of my vocabulary outside of some very pointed humor. But I'll say 'that's pretty gay', in a negative context, without even thinking twice about it, because that's just the language I use and everyone knows that by 'gay' I mean 'stupid' and not 'homosexual' because on that anonymous server they're all just like me.

    Except they're not.

I don't know why I have this blind spot to LGBT-offensive language, but I do. And I think you're right: some men just want to watch the world burn, and they'll fling napalm onto any person that announces their presence. But there are also people like me, who contribute towards setting a baseline derogation of homosexuality in the gaming communities in which they participate without even thinking twice about it.

But the thing is, I'm not a bigot. I harbor no ill-will towards Gaymers--at worst, I'm under-informed. So when things like Gaymer X and Gaming in Color come along and tell me, "Hey. There are probably LGBT players in your game and they are being hurt by the things you are saying," it makes me not want to say those things because I don't enjoy hurting people (and to the credit of both those programs, they don't even ASK for change--brilliant!).

But again, that's just my personal experience.

I'm not gay but a lot of people have tried to "bully" me in online multiplayer games, but they never succeed because I don't give a ****. So there, problem solved.

It would be cool to see a game more targeted to gay gamers, but I don't see how they could pull it off without it seeming exploitative or offensive. Imagine if they tried to bill a game as targeted toward black or hispanic gamers.

Same here. You have to agree with every gay/LGBT article or you get bashed. I'm not saying I "hate" the community, I have many gay friends who are awesome, but still. Not gonna comment on this article.

Don't care if someone is gay or not. I'll insult and bully someone online equally, because I accept everyone as humans and not their sub-categories. Maybe that's why I don't get afraid when I make a joke about a black guy in front of a black guy.

I don't thing this is needed as "gay gamers" is so pointless as a target audience. Just out of curosity, what types of games should be made for gays? Or Blacks? Or Mexicans? Women gamers might like to have more games suited to them but a gamer plays all (almost all games). WoW is where all these women and LBGT need to go.
Though gay bashing or what it actually is called "**** talking, griefing, trolling" does use slurs to great effect. We should address this issue, but until people stop being annoymous *******s -mute, ignore, pm a gm, report are at their disposal.

Heh, one thing to consider is that every comment about how the film is unnecessary or wrongheaded, especially if it's angry, reinforces the thesis of the film. Every comment here that's angry about someone restricting their rights to trash someone in speech that shames them for being openly gay, female, or another race than white, is just going to make the filmmakers' case stronger.

Like, they could take a screenshot of comments left on this post alone, and use it in their film to demonstrate prejudice. Angry denizens of the internet, you are making their case for them.
