Kinect Sells 10 Million Units Worldwide

Posted on Thursday, March 10 @ 08:00:54 Eastern by

With a $500 million marketing campaign, a strong launch line-up and plugs from the likes of Oprah, Ellen and Hollywood stars, we knew Kinect would be a success. But we never expected it to sell this fast -- faster than the iPad, becoming the world's fastest selling consumer electronics device of all-time.

Microsoft has just announced that the Kinect motion-sensor for the Xbox 360 has sold through over 10 million units worldwide. In the first 60 days on the market alone, Kinect was able to sell 8 million units, which equates to a whopping 133,333 units per day.

Guinness World Records has acknowledged the tremendous sales rate, naming Kinect the fastest selling consumer electronics device, stating that "according to independent research, no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, which is an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector."

It's not just hardware. Kinect has managed to help sell over 10 million units of Kinect game software, Microsoft also confirmed. The device has also helped push strong sales of Xbox 360 consoles since Kinect released in November of 2010.

    I have a very hard time believing this. I know maybe 2 people with a Kinect, and I've never seen anyone leaving Target, Walmart, GameStop, or Sam's Club with one. It's hardly ever discussed in the forum and nobody I talk with online ever has anything to say about it, even when asked.

    Sorry, I just can't fathom it.

    I believe it, and it's a terrible terrible thing. I've come to terms with the fact that there are a huge number of people who purchase "casual" gaming stuff. Way more than the number of people like us who purchase the typically "hardcore" stuff.

    It's a scary thought though. The Wii sold through more than any console, despite the fact that most games were only half games, collections of mini-games, or straight up for children. The Kinect has apparently outsold what we expected despite the fact that there appear to be absolutely no games for it beyond the "party" aspect of it.

    Pretty soon, Nintendo, Microsoft, Sony, they're just going to make nothing but casual games for casual style gamers. It apparently is worth way more money than our market. -_-;

    I know like dozens of kids who bought one.

    Somewhere, in a little room, a man is crying. And that man is me.
