Kingdom Hearts 3DS Debut Doesn't Get Predicted Lovin'

Posted on Thursday, April 5 @ 00:47:58 Eastern by Heath_Hindman

Selling 213,000 copies in a debut weekend is fantastic for almost any game being released in Japan. The key word there is "almost". That's the amount Square Enix managed to push with Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance for 3DS this past week, and while it's a very high number that puts it atop the software charts, it falls well short of previous Kingdom Hearts titles Birth by Sleep (PSP) and 358/2 Days (DS).

The smaller user base of 3DS compared to those systems likely plays a role in all this, but with how the machine has been steamrolling the competition, most within the industry were expecting higher numbers of this game. Below are Japan's 20 best-selling games for March 26 through April 1, per Media Create.
1. (3DS) Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance
2. (PS3) Pro Baseball Spirits 2012
3. (PSP) Pro Baseball Spirits 2012
4. (3DS) Kid Icarus: Uprising
5. (DS) Pokemon Conquest (that Nobunaga game)
6. (PSP) Black Panther 2: Yakuza Ashura Chapter
7. (3DS) Super Mario 3D Land
8. (3DS) Monster Hunter 3G
9. (3DS) Mario Kart 7
10. (PS3) The Idolmaster: Gravure For You! Vol.6
11. (PSV) Pro Baseball Spirits 2012
12. (3DS) Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
13. (PS3) Devil May Cry HD Collection
14. (3DS) Hatsune Miku and Future Stars: Project Future
15. (PS3) Silent Hill HD Edition
16. (PS3) One Piece: Pirate Warriors
17. (3DS) Harvest Moon: The Land of Origin
18. (PSP) Shining Blade
19. (PSV) New Little King Story
20. (WII) Wii Sports Resort w/ Wii Remote Plus
This is the first time since about February when the PS Vita could claim two titles in the top 20 (last time, the games were Ragnarok Odyssey and Gravity Rush). Sony's new machine also saw a very slight sales jump to 12,000 units, though this minor victory is overshadowed by the fact that the 3DS sold 10 times that, and even the PSP sold 18,000.

Still, debuting at number one can't be all bad. Haven't played a kingdom hearts game in a while but I'm determined to buy as many third party games as I can muster for the 3DS.

Oh yeah. It pretty much crushed everyone -- it's just the previous ones debuted at more than double the amount of KH3D. Sad, because 358/2 didn't deserve those sales, but I really liked the demo of KH3D that I played at TGS. Didn't expect to like it, but was pleasantly surprised.

If Square Enix would stop dicking around and release Kingdom Hearts 3, I bet those numbers wouldn't disappoint anyone.
