False, the Rebels were aware of the Empires presence after Admiral Ozzel came out of light speed too close to the Hoth system. It was then Lord Vader commanded General Veers to prepare his troops for a surface attack. The machines were deployed on the surface and spotted by Rebel ground troops to Echo Base, however they would prove to be too much for the smaller arms of the Alliance and overtook the base.
