Let LEGENDofKARL Explain Call of Duty Elite

Posted on Tuesday, May 31 @ 11:44:07 Eastern by
I don't need to write much here because LEGENDofKARL does so much talking in the following video. Of course, come Thursday (the angriest of all weekdays) I might have a few choice words in Game Revolution's Revolutionary Rant.

Yes, Call of Duty Elite is a service coming to Black Ops in Beta form later this year and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 in November. There are paid and free versions of the service but what comes with a price tag has not yet been detailed. I don't think we'll hear about that until well after everything involved in the service has been explained in excruciating detail. Kind of like how the Kinect built up a ton of hype behind the tech before Microsoft told us how much we'd be shelling out for the camera peripheral.

If you're interested in finding out more first-hand, you can head to Activision's Call of Duty site and register for the closed beta now.

So basically Activision is trying to create a huge fileshare with social benefits? Can't wait to read you rant about this one, Daniel.

Ugh... I'm gonna grab my mouse and play Team Fortress Classic until the pain goes away. I'm sorry, but paid features on FPS? They all play the same! Sight enemy. Activate bullet hose. Win! Run around and get poked in the back with a knife. Respawn.

In more detail though, I think (or just pray with the mad fury of a man drowning in an acid bath with a rabid badger knawing through his tibia) that introducing paid multiplayer features into FPS gaming is doomed to failure. MMO's I can understand. I can't remember the last time I said to a friend, "Hey, let's go play that RPG where you can share a server with thousands of other players in a well-realized immersive world and not pay a subscription fee."

When they try this crap, are gamers (Again, see my fervent hoping above) going to say "Hey, let's go drop 60$ on the new CoD that has a monthly charge added on for crap features that don't mean a damned thing!" or "Hey. You wanna play some MW2?"? (Please please god, gamers, don't shoot my generosity in the balls and prove them right. It's so hard to give us the benefit of the doubt sometimes)

So it's basically CoD: Waypoint that you pay for? Sounds like a really terrible business move to me.

The more I hear about this the more I'm inclined to side with the people saying what a bad idea it is.

@Redspyda24 - That's exactly who I thought it sounded like. I just couldn't remember the his name or name of movies he was in.
