Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Mass Effect 3 "Extended Cut" DLC Free This Summer

Posted on Thursday, April 5 @ 07:48:14 Eastern by Keri_Honea

True to their word, BioWare announced this morning that they will release a DLC to expand/explain the Mass Effect 3 ending a bit more. It will be called the Extended Cut, it will release this summer, and IT'S FREE.

No specifics on the DLC were mentioned, but BioWare did say that the ending would be expanded upon (NOT CHANGED) with "cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes" that will provide "deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes."

"With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team's artistic vision," BioWare cofounder Dr. Ray Muzyka said. Executive Producer Casey Hudson even said that all post-development DLC for Mass Effect 3 have been "reprioritized" just for the Extended Cut.

Players will have until April 12, 2014 to claim the Extended Cut DLC for free. That's what blows my mind the most; I really believed the DLC would cost something. I don't agree with BioWare altering their presentation of the ending at all, but I have to hand it to them for making it free.

Once it releases, I may start a betting pool on how long it takes for those who demanded a new ending in the first place to scream that this Extended Cut isn't what they wanted. You know that will happen; it's all a matter of when.

So I'd have to pay for it if I don't claim it before it's released? I still need to nab the first games...

I got the "optimal" ending and was fine with it. Watch this dlc ruin it for me.

Probably the best move BioWare could do. They don't change the ending completely, and they make it optional, and free, for those who want too...

So there will be new consoles...and most likely a new ME-branded game...by the time they charge for this DLC. Smart move.

It sounds like it's not going to be playable, just a more drawn out conclusion and wrap-up.

"You know that will happen; it's all a matter of when."

It depends on who and why it happens to color an objective reaction. Specifically, if the legitimate complaints raised about the ending are not addressed, they're right to be mad. For my part I don't see why people are losing their minds over the thought it might get changed. Bethesda did it. Why can't Bioware? Developers make mistakes and, in this case, the mistake was to abandon a creative process that had produced nearly flawless results across three games for something which managed to completely blow up in their faces. I hope the DLC addresses everyone's legitimate concerns and puts the issue to bed, but you're probably right...

The extra scenes will be whatever members of your team are alive at the time commenting on whatever color the explosion that is happening is.
