E3: PC or rather about the lack of it

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Announced, Shocks Industry

Posted on Thursday, August 30 @ 07:24:43 Eastern by

Ask any of us on GameRevolution—things have become a bit stale this generation. We're running out of exciting things to talk about each day. We're literally begging for the next generation to arrive to breathe some life into the console industry. Then Hideo Kojima swoops in to save the day.

At the Metal Gear 25th Anniversary Event in Japan just hours ago, Kojima Productions made a few solid announcements. A Metal Gear movie was unveiled, and a social game called Metal Gear Solid Social Ops also was shown—but Hideo Kojima took the stage to make good on his team's promise to shock the industry by debuting Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes live on stage using the developer's new Fox Engine.

Everyone in attendance was stunned at the atmosphere and scale of MGS: Ground Zeroes, said to be an open-world, visually captivating, true to its roots Metal Gear Solid game.

The demonstration showed "Snake" sneaking around, crawling to avoid searchlights, stealth kills, then Snake radioing for an evac heli. They only referred to him as "Snake" and not Solid Snake. So it very well could be Big Boss or yet another clone.

Although it's been said that the game is designed with the PS3 and Xbox 360 in mind, many are convinced that to achieve this level of fidelity, MGS: Ground Zeroes simply has to be a next generation game. The game runs on Fox Engine which has been built for current and next generation consoles.

Kojima was pitching it as a "Game without Game Overs", as in the game doesn't end if you're discovered.

Expect more information soon as the dust settles in Japan, but for now, feast your eyes on these two images.

Are you sure it's Solid Snake? I thought Kojima said his story was over. And isn't that a Militares San Fronteres (sp) patch? And one of the suits from Peace Walker?

Kojima is also known to troll. Hence, Metal Gear Solid 2.

Also, I just noticed... there seems to be a visible strap above his right eye... and it's not for the goggles...

I can tell you are a true MGS fan, analyzing anything and everything. My guess is yes, trolling. And I should clarify in the article that he was only being referred to as "Snake" and not Solid Snake.

Peacewalker took Big Boss right up to the first Metal Gear for the MSX computer. It would make sense (especially with the celebratory timing) that an older more seasoned Naked Snake's next adventure could be a remake of that first game from Big Boss' perspective.

Still, I keep waiting for Konami to let Kojima make a new IP. Sigh.

You're right. Noticed that in two last pics, the implied eyepatch is on different eyes. Looks like he has Sagat's reversing eyepatch syndrome.

It could be Big Boss or, knowing Kojima, it's Otacon. Or Sunny. Who the hell knows half the time with Kojima. Might be Johnny. I'm just happy it's not a picture of Snake with the hi-fi blade and a cyborg body.

I certainly wouldn't mind a Metal Gear-style game that just has new characters and a new story, and no bosses that are a rip-off of Psycho Mantis. After all, whenever I remember that Snake is designed to be a complete rip-off of Kurt Russell in the Escape from New York/L.A. movies, I certainly wish they'd just start over, without the impenetrable AI subplot going on.

Certainly looks like Big Boss in the concept art at least. Are you sure it was Big Boss during the demo?

There's an eyepatch strap going underneath the goggle, and a MSF patch on his arm.

Yeah, it's Big Boss. And do you know what this means? With this game, there are going to be as many Metal Gear games where you play as Big Boss as there are ones where you play as Solid Snake.

Well hold on... the eyepatch is on different position on both pictures! Could it mean...? Is big boss related to Sagat?

I don't know yet. I didn't see it for myself. I was going by what my colleagues have told me. But there's something about being there live, seeing things like this be unveiled and knowing they're going to have a significant impact on the industry.

Like many have said, I think it is definitely going to be either a completely new prequel or a remake of the original Metal Gear. It even has "zero" in the title. I can't wait for Kojima to prove me wrong!!
