Microsoft Illuminates Your Living Room With New Tech

Posted on Wednesday, January 9 @ 14:01:43 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Say hello to IllumiRoom, a new piece of tech currently in the works at Microsoft. As you can see in the video above, IllumiRoom illuminates the room (go figure) as you're playing a game, allowing the experience to expand beyond the confines of the television screen.

The tech is described as being a "project designed to push the boundary of living room immersive entertainment by blending our virtual and physical worlds with projected visualizations." It's also important to note that "the effects in the video are rendered in real time and are captured live -- not special effects added in post processing."

Interesting stuff, no? What do you think of IllumiRoom? Will we see it supported in the next Xbox and/or Kinect? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Looks cool at first. Then I realize its a distracting gimmick. Would be nice maybe in a game in which someone was coming up next to you but this does force the console to have to render a bigger screen which could lead to performance loss.

Would be awesome on drugs for a little while.

Id love to see what modders could do with it. I remember some of the awesome visuals and effects on the original modded xbox

I think having the extended screen is cool allowing you to see more of the environment which would be really interesting in a FPS game, provided it would allow you to see enemies, or is helpful in some way.

I agree with Sourdeez, I worry about performance loss and how distracting it might be. I'm also concerned about how it would work in different rooms/environments... It works well and looks alright in a bigger room on a flat wall (not in a corner) with no windows, darker walls and reasonably smooth surfaces.

If it did let you see enemies or give an advantage, I could see people crying "Pay to win!" over this tech.

This must be what that projector patent was for. Depending on how they set it up, I don't necessarily think there would be any performance loss. I would be interested to try it for gaming, but its immediate appeal to me would be for movies & music because, yeah you know, drugs.

So this is the tech you had an article on a month or so back? Still seems like it would only really be awesome in a room completely devoid of furnishings.

    Also, as stated above: DRUGS.

Are they moving towards more siezure inducing video gaming? I know the disclaimer say they may occur in individuals who have never experienced one but this seems to be pushing it a bit

How the hell does this work? Also, this + kinect + 25 years of technological advances = holodeck.

I thought it looked cool, then it seemed distracting. I liked how at first it was just splashes of color around the TV. I think it was Panasonic who did something similar to this. They had a TV with lights on the back that would illuminate the area behind the TV with colors similar to the colors on the screen. Was cool, but didn't add much to the experience.

That Panasonic was the first thing I thought about! Yeah that was cool, ambient light that comes out of my TV...sweet
This looks just as gimmicky, I will say when it showed the snow on Mario Kart that did look pretty cool.

It's disorienting to me but I'd have to try it out. If it costs extra (like a kinect) then no thanks.
