Microsoft Rumored To Be Phasing Out MS Points

Posted on Tuesday, January 24 @ 08:46:07 Eastern by

Rumor has it that Microsoft is planning on phasing out their current currency system, Microsoft Points, by the end of 2012, instead making content available in each country's native currency.

The move is likely due to two reasons: To bring the Windows Phone Marketplace more in-line with Apple's iTunes App Store and Android Market, and to reduce losses occuring due to fluctuations in other countries' exchange rates.

Microsoft uses MS Points on Xbox Live, Games for Windows Live, Zune, and Windows Phone.

Are you glad to see MS Points go?

I would love to see MS points go. I much prefer the PSN way of managing money.

Money is money. Microsoft points were always stupid.

About time. Microsoft Points are so illogical right now.

While I approve of this notion, I'm going to play devil's advocate here:

I've read about this news on other sites, and some members do bring up a point. If points are phased out, there's very little chance of picking up really good deals on Microsoft Point cards. Stepping into a store and buying 1600-point cards for less than $20 each while they're on sale will probably go away once this move happens. It'll be more straightforward to price them with a big "$20" emblazoned on them, meaning the savvy consumer won't be scoring deals like this much longer. \

On the other hand, spending money on point amounts that usually end up being just over what you need exactly... yeah, I'll take the straight up currency, please.

Ive seen places with PSN points cards on sale, so that kind of gets rid of that concern.

I'm surprised so many people (so far) have been supporting this. I've read plenty of complaints that nobody wants to give them their credit card and would prefer to have "points" they can purchase at a retailer. I never cared either way. I just hated how the points were just below or just above the exact purchase that I wanted to make (like Masterwabbit said)

I am for this 1000X. I always hated having to buy more points than i needed or just be short by like 20 points and have to buy 400 more. This will make it much easier.

I never have had any problems with buying them online though, since it seems very safe. I actually think buying cards at retail is a worse and would always get annoyed when my friend, with a perfectly good internet connection would need to go buy one, and he even said it wasnt because of having his card online so i dont even know. Nowadays though i never even see points cards at retail, i thought they just phased them out. I would actually be for them phasing out points at retail entirely honestly.

I don't approve. I already purchased a content once with my CC information. I'm still regretting that. I renewed my XBL membership and MS decides to make it into an "auto-renewal." I had to contact support and tell them to turn it off. They did, but it wouldn't let me delete my CC info. So, I called support again. They insisted I could delete on the Xbox 360 in My Account. I already tried that before. So, I said, "Fuck it." and just leave my CC info on there. No sense in arguing with them. I'm hoping they don't turn the auto-renewal on. If they do, I'll be watching. This why I don't want MS points to go. I would like everyone to have their CC information secured.

And all of that has what to do with a switch to non points? just buy the new amount cards and voila, no different than buying a points card.
