Microsoft Unveils Xbox Smart Glass, Moves Beyond the Console

Posted on Monday, June 4 @ 10:13:07 Eastern by Sebastian_Moss

After rumors and leaks speculated at the release of the "Xbox Smart Glass", Microsoft has now officially announced it.

The app will be available on Windows Phone obviously, but also Android, and iOS. The "breakthrough" will allow the devices you own to work together, and make you able to watch part of a program on a phone and then continue it on 360 or vice versa. Also, while you watch television, your phone will be able to tell you facts about the show as it happens.

Games will also get the Smart Glass treatment and will be augmented with facts and different angles. Both Halo 4 and Madden were shown with Smart Glass running on a tablet, with extra content shown on the second screen.

You will also be able to "unlock the web" with the intelligence of Smart Glass as Internet Explorer will be hitting the 360 later this year.

Stick to GR for more information on Smart Glass, as it is announced.

really and truly, you are right. it sounds like a goldmine for advertising.

It will anger gamers, but this will open up interesting pathway for how this will apply to television. This could create like an "IMDB for fashion items" within the TV episode or "IMDB for product placement" in general.

Interesting stuff. I look forward to the public reaction

You play as the Eagles, Michael Vick throws a touchdown pass, smart glass informs you that in 2005 he was accused of giving a woman herpes and had secretly been receiving medication and treatments under the alias Ron Mexico... then an advertisement for trips to Mexico pops up.

I wonder how many 360 owners will actually use this feature? Unless MS start bundling the console with a smart phone or tablet of some kind, a lot of the base probably won't bother.

That's the problem with making a new feature optional. There's a good chance most gamers and developers will just ignore it. That's what happened with the Wii Balance Board, just to name one example. Why bother supporting an expensive peripheral when most of your customers probably don't have it?

Nintendo have done a lot wrong, but more often than not, they've been smart about bundling new peripherals with the console. So everyone who had a Wii had motion-capable controllers, and now everyone with the WiiU will definitely have the touch screen controller. Will MS make sure that from now on, everyone has a device that can run the 360-controller app?
