Nancy Pelosi Defends Video Games

Posted on Monday, February 11 @ 14:12:15 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

United States House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has made it clear that she is not in support of blaming the video game industry for the violence we see in America.

In an interview on Fox News, the host Chris Wallace questioned Pelosi, saying, "We know these video games where people have their heads splattered, these movies, these TV shows... Why don't you go to your friends in Hollywood and challenge them, shame them and say, 'Knock it off.'"

Here is her response:

I understand what you’re saying. I’m a mother. I’m a grandmother. But the evidence says that in Japan, for example, they have the most violent games [compared to] the rest and the lowest mortality from guns. I don’t know what the explanation is for that except they might have good gun laws.

I think we have to do it all, and that's why we included in there that we have to take a look at what these games are. I don't think we should do anything anecdotally. We have a saying here, 'the plural of anecdote is not data.' So we want to know what is the evidence, what will really make a difference here? And I think it has to be comprehensive.

Do you agree with Pelosi's reply? At the very least, it's great to hear from someone who isn't eager to throw video games under the bus.

If only there were more people like her around. Seems like only a dime in a dozen in positions where people can change anything.

I always thought she was crazy. Now I know it was just Fox News portraying her as such. And don't worry, I've already gone through ritualistic flagellation to cleanse myself of the evils I saw on Fox News, so I'm all good now.

I've actually talked to her after she did a Townhall meeting in San francisco, during the buffet. She's a very smart and open minded lady. She enjoys recent films (inception blew her away apaprently) and loves to share the same passions as her grandkids. Though she hates violence in general she doesn't seem to be the type of person that would attack the first amendment.

I don't approve all of her policies, but as a person, she's incredible.

Don't be fooled. She's just as dizzy as they said. However, in this particular instance, others are even dizzier than her. Must be a discount on crazy pills at all beltway pharmacies.

It is a fallacy to suggest that violent video games have a causal relationship to gun violence, or that violent video games somehow fuel violence in general. Video games weren't around during the crusades, but that didn't seem to stop the all the atrocities. Violent video games weren't around when Archduke Ferdinand got shot.

We, as consumers, created a demand for this kind of entertainment; Companies just sell us what they can sell us.

Nor do guns fuel violence. People have been killing each other since all they had were rocks, or even less, to bash each other over the head. Violence lives in people. There's a great series of video games which comment on this with a really famous tag line. What is it? Oh yeah...

    "War. War never changes."
