E3: PC or rather about the lack of it
By Starling

E3 2013 has been very silent for me. There's tons of media, but most of it buzzes past my ears without them catching the important keyword that my ears are fine tuned to receive: "PC" or "Personal Computer". Microsoft, Sony, EA and Ubisoft have all shown their cards...

Netflix Splits Into Two; Begins Offering Video Games

Posted on Monday, September 19 @ 14:04:57 Eastern by

When Netflix announced that they were splitting their instant streaming from the DVD-by-mail service, offering them as separate plans, people were pissed. Anyone taking advantage of the free instant streaming that the DVD-by-mail option allowed for, would now have to pay another, separate monthly fee if they wanted to keep their instant streaming.

Netflix heard the cries, and has issued an apology, and they're taking a new direction entirely. Here's what Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings emailed to me personally this morning (I am so cool):

Dear Anthony,

I messed up. I owe you an explanation.

Damn right you do, bitch! Awww Reed, you didn't have to. Mr. Hastings explains the reasoning for the initial split as something that was always planned, and as something that is necessary if they're to grow their instant-streaming offering. OK, we'll buy it. We want it to be better, too.

The best part of this email from Hastings, ol' Greedy Reedy says that they're now calling the DVD-by-mail service "Qwikster" while the instant streaming will remain under the Netflix wing. Even better, Qwikster will begin offering PS3, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii titles in the very near future. Likely as a response to Redbox and their recent push to offer video games.

I didn't see this coming, did you? Thanks for the personally addressed email, Reed.

If the price doesn't go up this may be worth looking into. Though I assume it will be just like gamefly which I've never tried but I know a few gamers who swear by it.

This is pretty frustrating for me. First, they increase the price by 60%, and now they are completely separating the two services. Is Qwiksters website going to sync with Netflixs, so I know if a DVD I am ordering is on instant queue? Sure, they are offering new services, for a fee. I am sure these new services will be optional, but didn't they just increase the price by 60%, oh yeah they did. Now they want to charge me more? That's what made there stock prices drop by 50% since that announcement. I hate that my opinion of Netflix (err Qwikster?) has changed so drastically over night but I don't see this as improving the service/s yet, it's only making things more confusing.

Aw, muffin... they jacked it up by 60%? Lets see, 60% of $8 is... what, like $4.25? So you now how to pay a whopping 12 bucks for more movies and tv shows than you could ever possibly watch? Not to mention $12 is still less than almost any single DVD if you were to purchase it.

I really don't get why people are *****ing so much. Its a stupid low price for the value you get out of it. Just think, that 4 bucks is 1 Starbucks coffee a month... surely, anyone can handle that, right?

Hey Hey Hey, no name calling is required here. I was fine with the initial price increase. For $9.99 to 16.98 (to keep both services) which is round about 60%. And increasing the price and adding no extra value is a reason to become upset. But again I wasn't initially upset about the price increase. I guess now I just don't see the need (or added value gain) in separating the two services. I'm sure I'm not the only person that isn't fond of change.

Just because a lot of people think the same, doesn't make a point valid. 60 million people listen to Nickleback, doesn't make them any good. My point being, holy crap Nickleback sucks.

They should have just called it quitster, seeing as how everyone's dropping their dvd service. How much is adding a game gonna cost, an extra $5. $10. No thanks i'll stick with gamefly whose cost hasn't changed in the 5 years i've had it.

Prediction: Separately, the two companies won't have the buying power to make either service function well. The DVD selection has already been falling behind, and Qwikster will have a tough battle against Red Box. Netflix streaming is facing a ton of new competitors, including google and amazon, who have Uncle Scrooge-like vaults of money to spend on exclusive content.

I think as more and more companies enter the streaming video arena, we will see less and less selection from all of them, and more exclusivity - want such and such movie /TV show? You need to subscribe to such and such streaming company - but they don't carry this OTHER show / movie you also want - some other company has exclusive rights to that...
In other words, the party's over folks, and we're all the losers.

If they have a comparable subscription to gamefly, offer an abundant selection and deliver faster than a 1 week turnover for their video games (my only gripe with gamefly) then I will definitely subscribe.
