New Minecraft Song May Have Plagiarized Little Big Planet

Posted on Thursday, September 29 @ 14:16:49 Eastern by Josh_Laddin
Remember that stink over the Metal Gear Solid theme probably being plagiarized from an obscure classical piece? Well this is similar, except this story is about purported game-on-game crime. See, the new 1.9 patch for Minecraft has a song in it called Chirp, which sounds... pretty much identical to a song in Little Big Planet called The Orb of Dreamers.

Chirp was actually released a year ago in a preview, but apparently it's only recently that the connection was made. You can listen to both songs and make the comparison yourself:

Pretty damn similar, right? What do you think - is there any possible way this is just a coincidence?

I've heard a lot of songs try to be like LBP. They all fail miserably, but it's funny to see how many have been inspired by it.

Techinically they're within their rights to change a couple notes here and there. That's how you get away with not having to pay royalty fees. Ask Vanilla Ice.

Yeah, both similar, but not identical twins. I have a “tin” ear anyway, so I’m not the one to ask. What are you trying to do put me to sleep? Those are both songs I would play for a baby to sleep with.

Ok, so I'm a music major, and here's my take. Technically, there's nothing illegal about what I'm hearing (though I didn't listen to much other than the first 30 seconds of each song). The chord progression appears to be the same, but you can't actually copyright a chord progression. They melody isn't the same anyways, and that's about all you can copyright. They obviously didn't sample the LBP audio, so you can't sue them for that. Basically, they sound similar, and that's as close as they get. It's not unlikely that it could be a coincidence, considering how common certain chord progressions are. It's not like the rhythmic groove is all that unique either.
