New PS3 Slim Has Large Hard Drive, Wii U Doesn't But Supports External Hard Drive

Posted on Thursday, September 20 @ 14:34:51 Eastern by

Whereas the recently announced PS3 Super Slim ("Slim-Slim"?) will come with a 250GB and 500GB SKUs, the Wii U will only come in 8GB and 32GB models. To make up for this, Nintendo will allow easy attachment to external hard drives.

John Koller, SCEA VP of Marketing, has stated in Engadget that the main reason for the PS3's large internal hard drives is due to consumer demand, "to make sure, out of the box, that there is an option for them to be able to download that content". This is in particular why the 12GB Flash-based system available in Europe and Hong Kong is not coming to America, though it should be mentioned that PS3 Slim-Slim  will support USB storage expansion and internal HDD replacement.

Nintendo America CEO Reggie Fils-Aime, however, believes that "the cost of that type of [external[ storgae is plummeting". Instead of forcing consumers to purchase a large hard drive with their console, they will "let the consumer buy as much as they want, as cheaply as they want".

Now, several notes here. First off, Sony is sending a mixed message when you consider that the Vita didn't come with large internal stoarge at all, something that would have been great for downloading PSN's offerings. That said, the PSN catalogue is much more robust that Nintendo eShop's, which would partially explain why it wouldn't make much sense for Nintendo to create a Wii U with a 100GB+ storage.

Eh, the Playstation Store vs eShop comparison is a valid point, I agree. But I still think Reggie Fils-Aime has a better point than John Koller. The price of external storage *is* plummeting. You can already buy 1 terabyte (or larger!) drives for less than $100. Putting a proprietary hard drive in a console increases the price more than you'd pay to get an equivalently sized third-party drive.

On the other hand, I have to admit I have a pretty screwed perspective. I'm not a big downloader, so I don't need huge hard drives in my consoles. My 160GB PS3 is still mostly empty, even after 1.5 years of gaming.

Unless there's another flood in Thailand that wiped out the world's supply of hard drives.

"the cost of that type of [external[ storgae", and "let the conusmer buy..." in the third paragraph. I can guess conusmer is some brain fart involving consumer and customer.

Also, external storage kits, bought complete or with HDD seperate, will run you well over $50 for anything above 250GB. Really, it is a nice feature for people who already use external storage devices, and much cheaper than propreitary HDDs, but on the other side, it's not really a great deal overall when you only offer such small storage options that even one game may not fit, and still charge a pretty penny for it.

I don't like that the PS3 cannot read external NTFS drives.

I know, that's a pain, but it's pretty easily fixed with free partitioning software.

    I own a PS3 which I've only used 4 or 5 times a few years ago. I use a 360 as my main system.

as I've heard it: you could easily swap out the Hard Disk drive of the PS3 with an off the shelf HDD meant for a PC. I'm surprised there is no HDD-less PS3 which simply lets you go buy one. Xbox was sold HDD less recently and you were given the choice which type of storage you'd buy even though you were limited to a 16GB flash drive or the Microsoft 250GB HDD.
