New Super Mario Bros. 2 Coming to 3DS This Summer

Posted on Monday, April 23 @ 10:08:40 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

Nintendo loyalists looking for another Mario adventure to sink their teeth into only have a few more months of waiting to go, as Nintendo has just recently announced that New Super Mario Bros. 2 is currently in the works with a scheduled release for the 3DS sometime this August.

The company broke the news during their Nintendo Direct conference, offering up a handful of screenshots, which - surprise, surprise - bear a striking resemblance to the other New Super Mario Bros. titles we've seen in years past. Nintendo described the game as an "all-new, side-scrolling adventure" featuring "Mario, Luigi and all your fave characters from the Mario series." Nothing all too surprising there.

Since this is the first title in the sub-series to come to the 3DS, it will be interesting to see how they plan to incorporate the 3D visual element into the gameplay. They managed to do some pretty cool stuff with Super Mario 3D Land, so here's to hoping that they don't just play it safe and give us the same old Mario experience.

Didn't you hear? Remakes are the new sequels and it sure isn't from just Nintendo this time.

"...don't just play it safe..." "... the same old Mario experience." This is Nintendo your talking about bub. You know the "wild and crazy" bad boys of video gaming. The unpredictable company that has brought you how many formulaic repetitive video game series in the past 30 years. "... the same old Mario experience." INDEED!

These "new mario bros." games are decent. Nothing more. It's crazy that they can't find a way to match the ingenuity of Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros. 3 all these years later. The new power ups in the "new" games are mediocre at best. The worlds are not varied/new enough (typical ice world, lava world, etc). The games are far too easy though this is obviously and sadly a function of nintendo's 2012 target audience. It is a slight to most gamers abilities, young and old. I beat Mario 3 when I was 9 years old and I am an average gamer.

In my opinion these games are the bare minimum of what Nintendo should be capable of using this tried and true formula. They still end up as good games, t's just unfortunate that they lack much of what made a 20 year old game a classic.
