New Super Mario Bros. U Announced

Posted on Tuesday, June 5 @ 09:21:40 Eastern by Jonathan_Leack

Nintendo has just formally announced New Super Mario Bros. U for the Wii U. It looks to expand upon the Wii's New Super Mario Bros. with new forms of gameplay, such as boosting where you can place blocks on the run, and a flying squirrel suit for moving around obstacles.

Little was shown during the short demonstration, but four-player co-op—which I'm sure many of you consider competitive—is confirmed. A release date is unconfirmed but a release date on or around launch is suggested.

I never get why Nintendo make co-op games like this and expect players to be cooperative. If I have the power to place blocks anywhere on the fly, I'd place them above players' heads as they try to clear a pitfall.

It was meant to be played either way. That's kinda what makes it fun.

What you don't seem to get this time is that it's a five-player game. The person with the Gamepad doesn't have a character on screen and instead uses the touch screen to give everyone else a leg up. Meanwhile, the other four are using Wii Remotes or Pro controllers to run through the levels, and they can be either helpful or competitive with each other.

Unlike online games, if your friends are being dicks to you in game, you can punch them in the face.
