Nintendo Confirms New Console For E3

Posted on Monday, April 25 @ 07:30:03 Eastern by

After setting the internet aflame for an entire week with rumors and speculation, Nintendo has officially announced plans to debut a new console at E3 when it kicks off on June 7th. The unnamed console will be in "playable" form at E3 and will likely have top billing during Nintendo's annual E3 press conference. Nintendo has also revealed plans for a 2012 release date.

President Satoru Iwata says Nintendo will "propose a new approach to home video game consoles", hinting at the new, touchscreen-enabled controllers that have been the focal point of many of the recent rumors. And just because the company focused on 3D with its most recent handheld, they don't plan making 3D the main draw with this new home console. Iwata continued:

It's difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven't obtained wide acceptance yet.

E3 is less than two months away and GR will be there live from the show floor reporting on this new Nintendo console. Can Nintendo revolutionize the way we play video games yet again? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.

Hopefully they'll learn from their past mistakes (mistakes in my opinion, anyway) with the Wii and go back to making actual video games instead of glorified flash games.

In response to the loss of her daughter's DSi and Wii including all games a chick I once knew posted the following on Facebook, " They were b-day gifts for her 4th and 7th bday! She has yet to see a gift this bday plus made honor roll twice!! I am to the point where I am tempted to call a place that is hiring for escorts & work for a week" I hope the new nintendo console can also motivate mothers to provide escort services...what you won't do for Mario.

Sounds like another gimmick-driven piece of hardware is heading our way. This sort of stuff has a limited life cycle and considering this console is gonna be stuck in between "generations" I can't but smell another Dreamcast coming. Somehow, I don't see "casual" gamers that adopted the Wii and made it a success years ago and whose consoles are now gathering dust, going for this again. Most likely they've since, moved on to stupider fads, it's what they do. I hope I'm wrong.

If this new console can't rival the PS3 or 360 in terms of graphics and third party support I'm not even going to give it a chance.

So, Nintendo finally decided it was time to make a current generation system. Good for them, it's about time they caught up to the rest of the gaming world. The screen on the controller seems a bit silly to me, and it'll end up killing battery life. That is unless they will be wired controllers, which I doubt would go over so well with today's gamers. I'm not particularly interested in another Mario/Zelda/Metroid/Pokemon title, so they better come up with some new content this time around or I'll be ignoring it just like I have with the Wii.

The idea of the Wii - combining low tech, accessible controls with multiple user demographics including senior citizens and handicappable was successful but, I've yet to see a wii lately that is being used. Hopefully the next nintendo system will beinnovative enough to do what the last system did.
