Nintendo Debuts First US Wii U Commercial Ahead Of Launch

Posted on Thursday, November 1 @ 12:21:37 Eastern by

We're just a little over two weeks away from the Wii U launch, and for the most part, I can't imagine that the average non-gaming consumer knows much, if anything, about the Wii U. You and I may have been following Wii U news for well over a year now, but it takes advertising for the everyday Joe to take notice. Until now, there hasn't been much of that.

This morning, Nintendo released the first commerical to air in the US, aimed at educating potential buyers. It's nowhere as bad as the wreck of a video the UK commerical was, but the horrible videogame-esque dubstep is too distracting to even pay attention to the commercial's content. I think that we do a better job spreading the Wii U word, although Nintendo may feel otherwise.

What I did take away from what I watched is that the Wii U has a tablet controller, will be good for families and casuals, and the fact that Nintendo has found the Wii U's slogan: How U Will Play Next. What did you take away?

Terrible commercial and completely off-putting for a hardcore gamer in his/her 20's like me.

Sadly, you're not their target audience anymore :(

I can totally see people still get confused over the fact that this is an entirely new console and not just an add-on controller

I think that's the biggest problem they face with the Wii U. Because of Wii being such a large part of the console's name, plus the fact it uses many Wii controllers, it's going to confuse people who think that it's simply a new controller for their Wii, which may not be as appealing to people who bought it in the first place.

They don't need to target our group. We've been following the news all along, and we already have a fairly solid opinion one way or the other. This ad is for everyone else, who haven't been engaged with the hype machine.

I think the "sping, sping, sping!" commercial was somehow better than this one. I guess we're going to find out just how much gaming ad campaigns matter, or not.

Speaking of lack of advertising, I tried discussing the Wii U with a coworker that's a casual gamer, and he had never even heard of the thing. I pulled up a picture of the tablet controller on my phone for him, and he thought it looked stupid. Sure, that's just the reaction of one person, but if Nintendo is hoping to catch the casual market again, it's not looking good for them.

Also, that commercial is terrible. It doesn't even make it clear that this is a new console and not just another in the long line of gimmicky Wii controllers. Whoever they hired to create that abomination of advertising should never be allowed to create another commercial again.
