I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

Nintendo "Moving Ahead" With Wii U Virtual Console, GamePad-Only Play Coming

Posted on Wednesday, January 9 @ 10:43:17 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

When you want to access the Virtual Console on the Wii U, it will currently take you to the dated interface of Nintendo's last generation console. What's worse is that none of the games take advantage of the GamePad.

Fortunately, that all will change in the (near) future when Nintendo updates the Wii U with a proper Virtual Console that takes advantage of the hardware's capabilities.

A rep from Nintendo of America told Kotaku, “We do not have any specifics to share at this time. However, we are moving ahead with development of Virtual Console for Wii U, and we plan to make it so you can play it on the Wii U GamePad alone.”

I don't know about you, but the idea of kicking back anywhere in my house to play Super Mario RPG on the GamePad sounds downright incredible. Now all we need is confirmed GameCube support and I'll be sold.

I'm unfamiliar with what the virtual console is. Is that what runs Wii games? In other words, does this announcement mean I might be able to play some Wii games with the GamePad?

No, the Virtual Console is a shop Nintendo has where you can buy a bunch of old games to play on the WIi/Wii-U, like Super Mario Bros, Ocarina of Time, etc. Wii games have nothing do with this.

The virtual console is what runs classic games from past systems(NES and SNES) on the Wii. From my understanding (not owning one myself) there is a full Wii inside of the Wii U, meaning the current Wii U software is not compatible with the Wii virtual console, so it just turns on the Wii section of the Wii U and uses that. So sorry to say from what i gather no, this update only applies to the software controlling the virtual console, and not the Wii section of the Wii U.

The first thing that comes to mind actually, is a modified version of Pokemon Snap that lets you aim by moving the GamePad around as if you're actually holding a camera. They already modified the game for Virtual Console on Wii to let you share your photos from Snap, so why not mod it again to aim with the WiiU gamepad's motion sensor?

I must say its going to be nice to be able to play on my gamepad rather than playing on an emulator through another emulator.
